Playa del Carmen Beach O-LIMP-XX - Non-Athletic Events

Admittedly, it’s a l-o-o-o-ong time yet until the inaugural edition of the Playa del Carmen Beach O-LIMP-XX ...171 days from today - October 1st - as a matter of fact. But even given that extended time frame, we’ve had several inquiries as to what competitions will make up the Non-Athletic Events portion of this two-day happening. It’s perhaps appropriate that we give you some indication of what contests are currently planned and to seek the input of you potential Olympians as to your opinions. Please take a look at the procedures and competitions we propose conducting and respond to his poll with your reactions and interest in taking part. We realize that most of you will not have arranged your trips to Playa yet, and may have no notion at this point if you will be able to participate in the games, but we would still appreciate hearing your views. Based on the descriptions of the various activities below, please indicate if you would be interested in taking part in these contests.

Playa del Carmen Beach O-LIMP-XX

Non-Athletic Events

Entry Procedure:
For the team events, you may enter either as a team, or as individuals and you will be matched up with other solo entries to form a team. If you feel you would like to put together a team beforehand, and enter several events with that group, you’re welcome to do so. If you want to show up in team uniforms...go for it.

Note: In any of these events where a relay is required, rather than passing a baton, a sombrero to be worn on the heads of the participants will be transferred from contestant to contestant. In the event the sombrero comes off the competitor’s head at any point, they must start their portion of the event over again.

Tequila Triathlon (4 person teams) - Participants put on the sombrero, sprint (or not!), 30 feet down the beach, drink a shot of tequila, suck on a lime wedge, bend forward and rest their forehead on a support to be provided (like a plastic baseball bat), make three rotations around this support, race (or not!) back to the start line, and pass the sombrero to the next team member. First team to finish wins. (Note: If a participant just can’t stand tequila...hey, it could happen... they may substitute another beverage of their own choosing, but they will be responsible for providing their own consumable.)

Pool Noodle Javelin Toss (individual event) - Self explanatory. Strictly for distance, no style points.

Tortilla Discus Throw (individual event) - Self explanatory. As with the javelin toss, this event is for distance only.

Water Balloon Shot Put (2 person teams) - Throwing a water-filled balloon back and forth between two players, taking a step farther apart after each successful completion. Last team remaining dry wins.

Beer Can Bucket Fill (4 person teams) - Contestant puts on the sombrero, sprints (there’s that word again!) from the start line into the ocean, fills a beer can with water, races (yeah...right!) back to the start line, pours the water into a bucket, passes the beer can and sombrero to the next team member. First team to fill their bucket wins.

Schooner Races [that’s “Schooner”, as in schooner of beer] - Team competition (4 person teams) - Pretty much self explanatory. Your classical chug-a-lug contest. First competitor drinks a glass of beer as quickly as possible, turns the empty glass upside down on their head to demonstrate it’s empty, returns the glass to the sand, at which point the next team member can begin drinking. First team to finish their beers wins. (Note: Spillage will result in disqualification)

(Note: In the case of the following two events, hormone testing may be required to verify the sex of the participants. Given the nature of the contest though, providing a urine sample should not be an issue.)

Schooner Races - Male - As above, but individual, head-to-head competition

Schooner Races - Female - As above, but individual, head-to-head competition

25 Yard Dash [or stagger, or stumble, or wander, or stroll, or saunter](individual event) - Self explanatory, except for the fact that competitors will be wearing swim fins. No running backwards permitted. First contestant across the finish line wins.

Coconut Roll Relay (4 person teams) - Contestants will be required to push a coconut down the beach 20 feet - using only their heads - from which point the next member of their team must push it back, etc. First team to complete the four laps wins. Wearing a sombrero is not required.

Sand Crab Crawl (2 person teams, 1 male, 1 female) - Contestants on all fours, one facing in each direction, his inside leg tied to her inside arm, her inside leg tied to his inside arm, race (or not!) 20 feet down the beach, around a marker and back to the start line. First team to complete the course wins.

Well, there you have them O-LIMP-XX fans, the Non-Athletic events of our PdCBO Games. Nothing is cast in stone at this point, and changes may be required because of lack of interest, unavailability of required equipment, etc. We suspect these competitions will likely take three or four hours to complete, depending on participation, which should leave lots of time for pursuing other distractions and socializing. We don’t anticipate getting started until after lunch, especially since the Scavenger Hunt will have taken place the previous day, and some of our “athletes” may have violated the curfew and even avoided the official’s bed check, and stayed out somewhat later than they ought to have. You’ll be given plenty of advance warning as to times and places.

The Trivia Competition that Sun Seekers and Greek2Me are conducting will take place some time after the Non-Athletics, presumably after dinner, most probably in a different, more civilized, location. (ie: “Civilized” meaning with a bar!) But they’ll be giving you the lowdown on that aspect of the programme.

Perhaps the O-Limp-XX Committee might consider revising this event as follows:
Contestant puts on the sombrero, chugs a can of beer, sprints (there’s that word again!) from the start line into the ocean with empty beer can, fills the beer can with water, races (yeah...right!) back to the start line, pours the water into a bucket, passes the the sombrero to the next team member. First team to fill their bucket wins.

Hey, anything is possible, Denise. Like I said in the thread...nothing is cast in stone. I'll put your proposed change forward to the select committee responsible for making such momentous decisions. Wait a minute...that's ME! I'll get back to you.
(I like the way you think, D. You're fun, with just the teeniest mean streak!)

Do you get extra points for this one by snorting up lots of sand in the process??

What you chose to snort is your own business, Karen

Yeah, it turned out great didn't it, Kinz. As I indicated in the other PdCBO thread, all the credit goes to Ginger for creating it for us. Terrific how she managed to work in the official Olympic five ring colours, isn't it.

I can't wait!!! Just to clarify, I voted for all the non-drinking activities, not because I don't drink, but because I can't drink under pressure. Not even in my youth, no shots, no funnels..nothing. Just could never do it. Just didn't want anyone to get the wrong impression. Now someone get me a bloody!!! It's got to be cocktail time somewhere.

Thanks, Bump. But I can't take all the credit. Bump told me what he envisioned, and I just managed to throw it all together. I did do a little research into the ring colours! Glad you like it.

I frankly admit to being shocked, astounded, stupefied, stunned, and disquieted!! Not a single person has indicated any interest in the individual beer-drinking events, and only a pair of aspirants in the team competition?? Who are you, and what have you done with the legendary thirsty throng of cerveza-swilling forum folk?? At this rate, even our limited budget will certainly be adequate to handle the meagre requirement for wobbly-pop. A six pack oughta do it!! A freakin' SIX PACK!! Heck, I spill more than that!!

I am really sorry I am going to have to miss this super event. I would certainly want to be on the list for the tequila triathalon. Who's going to be pouring the tequila (Could it be Tommy?)

NOT!! While it appears we have some extra funding available because of the under-subscribed beer drinking competitions, I don't think even that much additional cash could underwrite Tommy's tequila misadventures.

Yah, um, I didnt' read it clearly enough. If there's any beer chugging contests, us CAnadians are definately in. I'll challenge anyone to beat my husband in a beer chugging contest. Game on!

Oh, Ginger!! I think our husbands may be going head to head in the beer chugging category. I've never seen mine beat yet!! Yikes!!
