Mount St. Helens

Magma is moving. Some folks near it are being evacuated. The news said explosion is "imminient". Alert moved to level 3, people at observation center 5 miles away were forced to leave.

The mountain is angry. It requires a sacrifice. Any virgins around?

Ron

I remember when it erupted last time, I was in grade 3 and my teacher was down in Seattle. She brought back a bunch of ash that had covered her car. We were living in Victoria back then, ash never made it up that far. But they say it did make it up as far as Vancouver.

My 18 year old daughter grabbed me at noon Friday to show me the news. "Look, Mt. St. Helens is erupting". I looked at the new coverage, and said "No, it's just farting. See that massive crater the fart is in the middle of, now that's was an eruption." I had to explain to her how that crater did not exist before 1980, and the mountain was a lot taller before that. Then I told her about the ash drift to the east. I'm anticipating a little (large) geology lesson for her in the coming days.

Great pictures Cuff! We used to camp down at Silver Like right near the mountain and glad that wasn't where we were whe she first blew. We were camping over on the Olympic Peninsula near Sequim and our tents were covered in light ash. The next eruption - the big one - I was driving down I-5 heading home and then we continued to watch it from the rooftop of our house that evening. The Johnston Ridge Observatory is new since those days and it has been crowded with visitors this week, but now they've closed it since it's moved in the danger zone. Since it's smaller I can only see it on the boob tube. The weather here is beautiful now, 70's and clear.....so anyone with a view is getting some great scenery.

I remember the National geographic had a fabulous issue with all the pics and info you'd ever need shortly afterward...It blew me away.

Wow, hurricanes, earthquakes and now volcanoes erupting. Amazing what one dropped bottle of tequila will do. (By the way did anyone get a taste bofore it hit the floor?)
