Anyone? Charge for Mexico Tollfree call on a Telcel?
Anyone know how much Telcel charges if I make an in Mexico toll free call from my cell. I know it would be free from a land line but I doubt its free from a cel, anyone know?
The info on their website is out of date at best, and very unhelpful. But I know they charge something, I just want to know if its minimal or if its like making a long distance call to where the number is based. Thanks |

So like 5 pesos a minute unless I get the 1 peso per min thing turned on for that number.
The reason I was asking is so I can call the AT&T of mexico then transfer to the US Calling card number and get a cheap rate to the states. That seems to work from a pay phone but I would prefer to make the call from home rather than the street. I think I will see if I can add it to my 1 peso call list. Thanks |

I've never been able to make a 1-800 call from a Mexican land line. My credit card account was frozen during one trip, because when I tried to withdraw cash I accidentally punched in the wrong access code twice. I was SOL until I got home, because all I had was a 1-800 number, which was useless there. Maybe things have changed since then. Now I always make sure I have a collect or regular phone number for my credit card company or bank.

We have been able to make toll-free numbers from the hotel, and the internet cafes. We always call the airline my husband flys for to check seat availability the day before we leave. It's like if no seats are available, then we buy tickets on Aviasca to Mexico City. We then try to catch a flight home from there. Flights are cheap this way, but it can be real hard on the nerves standing around waiting for your name to be called with tickets at the airport. It's real bad it you HAVE to/ no exceptions be at work the next day.
But all is good when we are in Playa |

Just to clarify....you can not call an American 1-800 number directly from a Mexico based pay phone. (with the exception of some private operators and some hotels that use internet phone service that acts like a US based phone, therefor allowing the number to connect) I have the Mexico based AT&T toll free number which I dial first then when it asks me to dial the number I want to call collect I dial the US toll free number and then enter my phone card number thereby tricking the system into thinking I am using my card from somewhere in the States and getting a lower rate than if I were calling from Mexico.

check out the phone book. you can dial them from a regular telephone by dialing an access code first (which are printed in the front of the phone book). I think normal US 800 numbers are 080-800-xxx-xxxx. You'll have to look up what the codes are for the 888 and other newer prefixes. I think it costs the same as a long distance call, so no big convenience really.

I think your right about the 1 peso thing only being for other telcel phone numbers. Last edited by Life_N_Cancun : 10-04-2004 at 02:53 PM. |
