I definitely think a better camera (with a higher resolution lens) is preferable to the inexpensive ones, if you are into SERIOUS underwater photography. But that comes at a price... EXPENSIVE ( see this website for underwater cameras/housings http://pcworld.com/reviews/article/0,aid,118272,00.asp). Low light conditions underwater and low quality lens contribute to extreme graininess in your pics. Underwater flash units are helpful...but unwieldy and again, Expensive.

Below pics taken with a disposable Fuji underwater camera. On the PLUS side with the disposables...good to about 50 feet depth and CHEAP, as well as very easy to use.
