First, CaroleLB, my heart is with you;that has got to be heart-wrenching!

2nd, Tappy, what a cool thing to do w/ your daughter

3rd, also do not forget Vet's offices! That is where we got Isabelle from :p They spent no telling how much $$ making sure she lived. I have told this before, but quick re-cap. She was abandoned by her "birth mother". They got her as her eyes were starting to open;had to tube-feed her. A bottle was too big! She had intestinal parasites, and was REALLY UGLY ! We stopped by to see if they had kittens for adoption, there she was :p We were looking for an orange kitty, so we picked her. They kept her for another week or so, and then said we could bring her home She weighed exactly 1 lb! and still had coxidia, but we took her! They did not charge us anything, and sent her home w/the meds. she needed to get rid of the parasites!!! They could not believe it was the same kitty when we brought her back for her check-up! :p (she is sitting on my shoulder as I type this )

I, too, have not told her she is adopted , I think I will keep that under wraps for a while longer! I can't imagine bursting her world open
Side-note:when she wants me to pick her up, she stands on her back legs, and raises her "arms" above her head and reaches up for me. I can only figure she saw all the human "kids" doing this, so she figured it was what to do Did I mention how smart she is???

CaroleLB;

Sorry for your lose. Been through that and I wouldn't wish it on anybody. We were half a continent away on vacation, when our first fur person, Snowball (world's blackest cat, by the way) who was staying with Mrs. B's folks, became ill and was diagnosed with an incurable condition. We had to have her put down. I think the toughest part was not being able to be there. I'm a pretty crusty guy, and Jackie dealt with mortality every day in her career in health care, but it was hard to take. We were determined not to put ourselves in the position of ever getting that attached to a pet again, but fortunately that resolve lasted about two months. We adopted two kittens to fill the hole in our lives and haven't regretted it a single day...well, okay, maybe a couple of times I've had second thoughts, but it's short-lived. I posted the following once before, and it was written about a dog, rather than a cat, but the message is the same and it translates well. Trust me, Carol, it will get better.

A man and his dog were walking along a road. The man was enjoying the scenery, when it suddenly occurred to him that he was dead. He remembered dying, and that the dog had been dead for years. He wondered where the road was leading them.

After a while, they came to a high, white stone wall along one side of the road. It looked like the finest marble. At the top of a long hill, the wall was broken by a tall arch that glowed in the sunlight. When the man reached the arch, he saw a magnificent gate that looked like it was made of mother of pearl. The approach to the gate was paved with pure gold.

He and the dog walked towards the gate, and as he got closer, he noticed a man at a desk to one side. When he got closer, he called out, “Excuse me, where are we?’

“This is Heaven, sir, “ the man answered.

“Wow, Heaven! But, it’s been a long walk. Would you happen to have some water?” the man asked.

“Of course, sir. Come in and I’ll have some ice water brought right up.” The man waved his hand, and the gate began to open.

“Can my friend come in to?” the traveler asked, gesturing towards his dog.

“I’m sorry, sir, but we don’t accept pets.”

The man thought for a moment, turned back towards the road, and continued along the way they had been going. After another long walk, and at the top of another long hill, he came to a dirt road which led through a farm gate that looked as though it had never been closed. There was no fence. As he approached the gate, he saw a man inside, leaning against a tree and reading a book. “Excuse me!” he called to the reader. “Do you have any water?”

“Yeah, sure, there’s pump over there.” The man pointed to a place that couldn’t have been seen from outside the gate. “Come on in.”

“How about my friend here?” The traveler pointed to the dog.

“There should be a bowl by the pump.”

They went through the gate, and sure enough, there was an old fashioned hand pump with a battered bowl beside it. The traveler filled the bowl and took a long drink himself, then he gave some to the dog. When they were both full, he and the dog walked back toward the man who was standing by the tree waiting for them. “What do you call this place?” the traveler asked.

“This is Heaven.” was the answer.

“Well, that’s confusing,” the traveler said. “The man down the road said that was Heaven to.”

“Oh, you mean the place with the gold street and the pearly gates? Nope, that’s Hell.”

“Doesn’t it make you angry that they use your name like that?”

“No. I can see where you might think so, but we’re just happy that they screen out the folks who would leave their best friends behind..”

Don't know if there's a recommended minimum age or not, G. I guess it's a sort of personal thing, based on the relative maturity of the individuals involved. Whenever you figure the critter and you are both emotionally secure enough to tackle the rather thorny issue, I guess. I suspect "The Boys" could handle it okay - they're quite grown-up 7 year olds - but I'm not altogether convinced I'm ready to deal with it! I wouldn't want them stumbling across the information on their own though. The feelings of rejection could permanently damage their furry little psyches, you know.

Tntsmith....vets/staff are heros......they work hard, long hours...... , alot of the stuff they do "pro bono" and for the love of animals....

Great story Bumper.......
By the way........ I think sometimes animals adopt us rather than the other way around
Animals are such a good judge of character......they seem to know who the good guys are !!!!!

Thanks! We think he's the best. His name is Ringer (the spot at the base of his tail looks like a ring) and he is an Australian Cattle Dog - also known as Red or Blue Heelers. He loves to run and is always trying to herd the kids around the backyard. I don't think I've ever had a dog that wasn't from a shelter.

Got my "big girl" from a shelter in MA and my "baby" from a local organization called Whiskers. They are the best because unlike shelters they do not destroy animals that are not adopted. It's more like a foster home situation.

Carole: You have my sympathy on your kitty.. I know how hard that is. Years ago we had to do the same with our 13 yr old English Sheepdog. It was the hardest thing I ever had to do. An even thinking about it as I write still makes me cry. But have heart that they will live in our memories for always.

Jake

This is my Corgi Jake posing with a bottle of Tequila and Margarita mix. The sombrero chip/salsa dish plays the "Mexican Hat Dance" song when you push the button. He is obsessed with it! I should take him with us when we go.

I have 4 dogs, all of which are loved beyond belief. There is "Max", he used to be a 110 lb Weimeraner, but has cancer and only weighs about 80 lbs now and 40 of it is the tumor I think. We will most likely have to put him down before we leave on Wednesday. This breaks my heart! He and I have always had a very special relationship. He was a stray that I rescued; he was so battered, malnourished and had pellets under his skin where he had been shot. He was about 4 when we got him and has been with us for 6. What a joy to our lives he has been. I will post a picture later.

We also have "Coco", a Chocolate Lab who has been with us for 10 years. She is so beautiful and of course loves to fetch. She adores living on the lake. In the summer we can't keep her out of the water so she smells like a wet mop sometimes.

We have two small dogs: "Booger" a Jack Russell and Chihuahua mix. She can talk, loves the water and the Jetski. She is only about 1 year old and again is a stray we rescued. She is ever greatful!!!
Then we have "Keke" which means "spot" in Hawaiin. She is the Big Kahuna mascot! She is a Mexican Rat Shitz. (Mexican Chihuahua, Rat Terrier and Shitz Su) a funny looking but adorable baby. She is only 6 months old. I got her from the Wal Mart parking lot. Keke can hug like a human, it is so sweet. She is really a terror when it comes to protecting food, yours, hers, theirs it doesn't matter.

Long post but I have lots of babies.

Petfinder.org Adopt a Homeless Pet

I have 3 dogs and 2 hamsters, all from animal shelters. These stories about abused and abandoned animals make me so sad. I have a senior dog myself, so I understand the sadness that you feel when they are not feeling their best. She is a 12 year old German Shepherd mix from the pound. Her hips are very weak and she has lost a lot of muscle mass. Our vet suggested joint supplements and they have seemed to help her. Our last dog lived to be 16 years old, and we had to put her down because she had a stroke. I recently drove an hour and a half out of state to adopt a hamster. It was absolutely worth it. He is the sweetest thing, despite his unstable past. It is amazing how animals can really impact your life and touch your heart.

Visit Petfinder.org to adopt a homeless pet.

Kahuna.........

So sorry to hear that.... I know how tough it is. It's such a shame our pets aren't able to stay with us thru out our lives. It would be SO much better. My thoughts are with you....

Tappy....your right!! Animals have that 6th 'sense' very few people have. I truly believe that.

Kudos to all of you

All of you who have posted here are what makes this board the wonderful place it is! Lots of heart,& caring people.
I have had beloved pets, chesapeake Bay Retrievers and a Basset hound,a spaniel,& my sons beagle & now a yellow lab.We would love to adopt one,but I have spent a lot of $ to get rid of rugs[new floors] etc. due to my athsma, just can't go there. Do miss them. Love to go to my cousins [I clean her house] & visit with her 2 kitties. I go & feed them when she's away, but when I leave,I'm sneezing and wheezing.
