Marlins?

Jesus, maybe you can verify for us since you're from Mexico and we're just visitors.

We understood that marlin were a protected species of fish and the rule was catch and release only, which we thought was worldwide. But we had noticed that El Oasis serves marlin.

Is the marlin in Mexico not similarly protected?

Hi Caroline,
I donīt think they are a protected species, but donīt know officially.
I have seen Marlin and Sailfish being served in restaurants all over the Pacific coast and now here in the Caribean with no trouble at all. If it was illegal they wouldn`t even try to advertise it at good restaurants.

The species I know are protected are the sea turtles, all of them, but I know a lot of people still eat them in soup or their eggs, they just donīt do it openly.

No, no no.
They also have octopus tacos, and for main dishes they have several kinds of fish. The average price of those is us$9 but I havenīt tried any... yet.

Our only meal in Playa last May was shrimp tacos at El Oasis. Pretty sure we'll be hitting that place on a near-daily basis on our next trip. Yummmmmmmmmm!!

How are the octopus tacos, Jesus???

Donna try the fish fixed El Diablo. Very spicy, kind of like blackened cajun. When I was asking about it Jamie came out and warned me about it. But I like it hot. It was great. Thinking about trying the octopus in its own ink this year.

I didn't try the fish filets at El Oasis (only the shrimp and the marlin tacos, which were VERY good!!), but I can honestly say that the THICK Black Grouper filet I had at Ula Gula ~ upstairs on the corner of Calle 10 y Avenida 5 ~ was absolutely to DIE FOR! I have been thinking about it ever since....perfectly cooked and sitting atop a pile of mashed potatoes which had been imbedded with some sort of greens...then topped with an exquisite sauce.....YUUUUUM!!!! I am NOT a person who fixates on food, so just the thought of wishing I was going to dinner there this evening says something! Each of our meals ran less than 150 pesos each and were worth every penny!

Ula Gula is absolutely beautiful too ~ candles and lovely, trendy lighting ~ very continental in mood and feel. Mike and I had the corner table which is PERFECT for people watching. Luckily, we got seated without reservations, but they are certainly recommended!

Sorry, didn't try them, I don't like octopus, find it too hard and gummy.
Tonight I had a fish filet Cajun, it was perfectly seasond. I only wish it was accompanied by french fries but even then it gets a 9/10.

Buen provecho.
