There are numerous places downtown that will do full or half braids for your wife's hair. Our resort offered 1/2 braid (like you see on my wife's hair) for $35.00 in the salon in the bottom of the north building by the gym. At the Playacar Plaza shopping center, the same 1/2 head braid was offered for $30.00. My wife actually got her 1/2 braid done the day we went to Akumal (which is my next day's trip report) for $20.00. She had it done Tuesday and took it our Sunday, the day before returning to work. The farther away from the Tourista zone you are, the cheaper it is.

Be aware that if your wife does this, you ought to have some strong sunscreen to put onto her scalp between the braided rows - rememeber that your wife's scalp has never seen the sun! My wife learned the hard way and is still paying fr it today!
