One of new Playa mayor Roman Quian's first actions, evidently, was to put Delmy's mother, Guadalupe Acosta Martínez (aka "la Sra Lupita" or "la Sra González," given my late father-in-law's high public profile), in charge of
el DIF for the Solidaridad municipality, which includes Playa.
DIF stands for
Desarrollo Integral de la Familia, and it's a governmental organization focused on such family-type issues as education, nutrition, children's safety and well-being, domestic violence issues, and so on. (The national page for
el DIF is
here, for anyone interested.)
Typically
el DIF is run by the wife of the mayor, as it was by outgoing mayor Carlos Joaquin's wife, Gabriel Rejón, during the last administration, but apparently my
suegra's very high reputation in these areas (she was also head of
el DIF for Benito Juarez municipality, including Cancún, when Delmy's father was mayor there in the 80s, and handled such issues in the disastrous aftermath of Hurricane Gilbert, for example) led to this outcome, instead, for this administration.
We are happy to know that Playa will be in such good hands, in this regard. Delmy's mother is very excited about this opportunity and was already at work yesterday and again this morning after being put in the position late Thursday. We send her our love and wish her the best of luck.
