i remember 15 -20 years ago when taxis parked at the park near juarez and the ferry
i had run out of gas and a cab driver sucked gas out of his tank and i paid him enough to get back to puerto morales the closest pemex station it was way different then the whole area around the park was mostly vacant lots with a shop here or there dirt roads dogs running amuck more like a typical mexican town that was the time to buy im in real estate and still kickin myself in the ass the millions i could have had |

Tommy, your picture makes me want to go back and dig up old photos of Playa too! That would be a good thread "post a random picture of old Playa!" Well, since it was before I had a digital camera, it would take me having to scan them in...and that might be a pain. Spoiled these days with digital I guess! I'll see what I can find though.

First time I saw Playa was via a bus from Cancun on our way to Cozumel. I only recall the busses parking in a dirt lot round about where the new mall area is now and our walking down the street to the ferry pier. Just a couple of small stores there. That was in 1990.
Then about 5 years ago when someone at work mentioned her son staying at a resort in Playa del Carmen, I argued with her, "No way. There's nothing there. You must have it confused with Cancun." In 2000 David and I stayed at an AI on Cozumel and took the ferry over to do a Tulum/Xel-Ha excursion. When I first saw the PDC coastline from the ferry, my jaw dropped open. I couldn't believe what I was seeing..... Then as we stopped along 307 to pick up more passengers at all the resorts... Blew me away. |

I've been visiting probably since about 85. I'm going to look for pixs. For all of us kicking ourselves about buying property back then, Here's a few things to consider. Lots of PDC was still in ejido (cooperative) back then and the legal problems of getting clear title to anything were far worse than now. Mexico didn't liberalize its property ownership laws until recently. Lots of the PDC area is still in ejido which remains a fairly formidable obstacle. However the main reason I didn't buy property years ago was...I had no MONEY!!!

I love looking at these younger pictures of Playa. Keep them coming. I have only heard stories from my sister who started visiting Playa back in the early 90's. She took me for my first time in '99 and I have not missed a year since.
