The walk would take about 20-30 minutes, only 5 minutes by cab ($5.00).
The resort is in Playacar so busses and colectivos don't go past. You'd find both IN Playa.
There is a small shopping center across the street. But head into Playa - MUCH MUCH more to see.
The water at the hotel is not safe for drinking. Doesn't mean you have to use bottled water just to brush your teeth, but since it's supplied in your room, feel free to do so.
