Playa Del Carmen July-August 2005

Now it's settled. We are coming back to Playa this summer. This time we bring my son, Martin, 16 years old. We are going to stay at El Tukan this time too. We wanted to order hotel through this site, but it's difficult getting the right price on airfare. Now we are going with TUI (Star Tour/Stjerneresor). They are using Lufthansa/Condor, and we are traveling Oslo/Frankfurt/Cancun.

This time we are going to explore other parts of the area. I hope Anna and James are preparing some interesting trips this summer. What about Ek Balam?

Kari, Martin og Thor Henning

The weather in Norway right now is freezing 8 degrees. It's beautiful with snow and ice on the trees. All white.

Thor:

How far north are you? (i.e. how many hours of daylight are you having each day at this point?) I was in Sweden once around Midsommer's Tag when the sun set around 11 PM and rose BRIGHT around 4 AM!

I'm at about 60 degrees north, and we are having about 7 hours daylight now, but it's getting even darker.

Besides from Ek Balam I'd like to take a trip to Isla Contoy. I haven't been to Cozumel or Akumal either. And I like to visit the inland too. Any suggestions?

Thor, in case Playa.info doesn't do an Ek Balam trip this summer, please go for it on your own. It's very easy to get to Valladolid on the bus, and Ek Balam is not far away. You can catch a taxi or take a tour offered by the travel agency in Valladolid. There are also many small villages in the area where you can get a good idea of how the Mayan people live today. You might also consider staying in Valladolid a night or two. The hotels are very inexpensive and delightful. Laura Mapchick has a new map of Valladolid that makes the small city easy to understand.

Don't think you have to be very far north for that. I saw that sort of thing, or even more daylight, one midsummer's day in Smaland, meaning south/central Sweden. Sun just keeps going around the sky. Amazing the way you don't get tired! Blackout curtains in all the rooms for when you feel you must finally get some sleep.

Thanks for the information JAH. I will try to get to Valladolid, villages and Ek Balam. May be the laguna in the north too.

If you want more information, Thor, please feel free to pm me. We were in Valladolid last month and will be going back the end of July with our grandsons. Plus we plan to visit Ek Balam with them at that time also.

Thor, I agree with JAH, you should definitely try to visit both Valladolid and Ek Balam. It's easily done as a daytrip... though next time we go I'd like to at least stay one night in Valladolid.

We were in Valladolid for an hour on our trip to Chichen Itza last year. I would like to see more of it. I am waiting for an answer from two couples from Bergen, Norway, who are also visiting Playa at that time. And I will get back to you JAH. Thank you for your information so far.

Just another vote for Ek Balam. The condition of the ruins there is amazing! Not crowded either, you may have the place to yourselves. There is alot to do in that area. Of course Chichen Itza, Valladolid, Balankanche caves, etc. There is a hotel just out of Piste called the Delores Alba that has clean, nice rooms with 2 pools (one made from a cenote) and a very nice cenote (Dzitnup) right across the highway. Their rates can't be beat also. Check their website for more info. The drive in that area is intresting too, many sights to see. Wherever you go in that area, I know you'll enjoy it!
