We tried this too, last time we got in really late and it was easy...it really isn't any further from the airport than many of the hotels in the Cancun hotel zone. We were renting a car though, not sure how much taxi would be?...
Problem is, there aren't really any hotels
close to Airport! If you can get a good online rate from a hotel zone hotel that includes shuttle pickup- i found one, once- that might be the way to go.
