Altho with every visit, Playa is vastly improving with what is available - its a crapshoot with what you will find and what you want to find! So if its the 'fluff' stuff you're looking for - like specific colours, blends, brands for home accessories, honestly we've learned you're still better off getting that at home at Linens'n'Things, Home Outfitters etc as you will have a much better choice. If you own a home in playa don't be thinking you'll be able to just come in hand luggage! There is always something that has broken, rotted, rusted that needs replacing!
There is (or at least used to be) a Pier 1 located in Sears, in the Las Americas mall in Cancun. Its just a small section so not a huge selection, but we did manage to get some stuff there rather than drag things down from here. Sams and Costco vary in their availability of linens/towels and colours and quality are not consistent.
We bring all linens (except beach towels - good thick ones usually available at costco and sometimes Sams) from home. Its amazing how much stuff you can stuff into a golf bag. Last month it brought down 5 30" sofa pillows! The hard case golf bag has brought things like silk plants and baskets, curtain rods and other gidgets!
If you are buying metal things.....either don't or make sure it is of the highest quality or it will rust. We initally bought a cutlery set from costco in cancun.....it was rusty in less than a month and had not been used yet! We returned it (they were great about that) and ended up buying another set at home to take down - it must be at least 18/10 stainless (18/8 rusted!). Same goes for things like pepper mills with metal guts.....rusted out and we ended up getting the ceramic guts inserted ones from home.
You can either choose to buy less quality items down there but you may be replacing them a lot sooner, or buy better quality items at home which generally last longer - if they don't go for a walk first!!
