Grrrrrr- I can not say how MUCH I'd wish it was 2009 already. Which would mean I'd be working and getting paid.........which would mean I could donate.
Right now my acc is in the minus- but as soon (or better: in the distant future) it shows a plus I'll donate to whatever cause is up right then and there.
The new plans look AWESOME and well- the work of Jen and Andy is priceless (and wonderful Maureen and Rick as well of course, along with Laura and and and and........all those who make it work!!).
Mexivoof- along the lines of what Heather and Shammy posted:
- while there are worthy causes to take care of close by the causes in countries such as Mexico often have a much harder time to survive, get organized etc. and less publicity, so I personally always tend to support them instead of those at home who have the publicity and get more attention from those close by (as we can see the Pet Shelter in its own way is still an "underground" project- also simply because many in the vicinity hardly have enough for themselves, let alone for dogs.....).
- I also like the fact that this is a "personal" project. Those who run it and are responsible are easily identifiable and one can get a personal impression of them. Not so with many other causes where there are more people involved, where one isn't really sure where the money is going etc..
This personal aspect and "easy to follow" aspect is what makes it great as well.
- and of course the aspect of being in love with the area comes into play..........which goes hand in hand with knowing the hardships the area has in stall. I fully understand why someone who has never been there would rather donate for a shelter close by- donations are where the heart is!
