What an awesome thread! I've been strolling down memory lane. I have every 45 I ever bought, except for the few that might have gotten too scratched from overuse and a dirty record player needle. (Remember those? Yep, I'm old enough.)

I was incredibly anal about cataloging and organizing my 45s, so I can tell you that 1970 was the big year for me...

My first 5 45s in order were:
  1. Candida (Dawn--Later known as Tony Orlando and Dawn)
  2. Overture from Tommy (Pete Townshend, The Who)
  3. Ride Captain Ride (Blues Image) Just read something about this song being about Sir Francis Drake, the explorer.
  4. Hitchin' a Ride (Vanity Fare)
  5. Julie Do You Love Me (Bobby Sherman---can't tell you how many times my best friends Bridget, Karen, and I screamed this song at the top of our lungs in my bedroom sitting in front of my little white plastic record player.)
There is absolutely no rhyme or reason to my early taste in music...We all just seemd to like songs that were fun to sing and dance to. Some of my other absolute favorites from that time were:
  • Lay Down (Melanie)
  • Spill the Wine (Eric Burdon & War)
  • I am Woman (Helen Reddy)
  • I Think I Love You (Partridge Family)
  • Tears of a Clown (Smokey Robinson & the Miracles)
I wish I still had a record player to play these old 45s!
