We have just returned from a week at RT. Friendly people, good food, good entertainment, nice pools, rooms are simple but clean, grounds beautifully landscaped. The beach is a short or medium walk, depending on your age and condition, and very nice.
I appreciate James' reticence about All-Inclusives, but we booked at the last minute and it was the easy lazy way to go. Riu Tequila is a good value and I would go back. That said, make sure that you get away from the AI environment and into town. You'll see nice small private hotels on the beach or a block off, great restaurants and watering holes to feed and water the carcass after a day at the beach - elegant or cheap as your prefer, and a cool and funky tourist street on 5th Avenue. We dined at Ajua! and it was as good as previous posts say. Away from the water, at the edge of town, I got a great deal on primo tequila at Covi.
Also, get away and south down the coast for one or more of the other cool places to visit. We did Xel-Ha and Tulum, but there are many other choices.
If you're thinking of going to PDC, go now, because I fear that with time it will become more and more like Cancun and Cozumel.
Before you go to PDC, surf this site and its forums. The site is exponentially better than any other for info on making your visit to PDC better.
