I bring my Nikon DSLR, multiple lenses and a pile of other gear with me to the Riviera Maya every time I go.
I've wandered in the back streets of Playa and Tulum with all my camera gear and never felt I was in any danger of having it stolen. I've used the camera and changed lenses on the beach in the wind and sand never seemed to be an issue. Basically, I've personally never had a major problem bringing and using my camera. Well, except for the two times when I dropped pieces of equipment to the pavement and smashed them to bits

but that's another story.
You bought the camera to take pictures and what better place to take great pictures than in the Riviera Maya. So my advice is take your new camera with you and snap away
Just remember to take the same precautions you would at home walking around with an expensive camera and you should have no problems.
Hope this helps
