Hey Bunny.... thanks for the response.
We ended up staying the first night at Hotel Cielo. It was one I'd researched, but I was sorely disappointed. The wi-fi didn't work..... my son ended up on the balcony and connected to the restaurant across the street. TV didn't work either. The only room they said they had with a balcony was a street room for $70. We were tired and just wanted to land for one night. So we took it.
I spent over two hours the next morning in and out of motels, checking availability and ammenities and prices. I'd done my research, I thought, so I kind of knew which ones had internet and what the prices "should be".
Pelicanos on the beach quoted me a price of $60 on our first evening there, but when I went back the next morning, it was $70, and they wouldn't let me check out a room to see what it was like.
We ended up at Copacabanas on 5th, and it wasn't that bad. It was quiet..... lovely courtyard garden, and pretty close to everything. Price was NOT cheap though. We paid $90 for a one-bedroom unit. The room itself was okay.... but internet was only available on the balcony. Ended up having to buy an extension cord at Wally World so my son could "chat" in the evenings without the computer timing out.
I don't know what "holiday" was going on, but evidently something was. It definitely wasn't low season prices that are listed on internet sites, for the 15-20 places I checked out on Saturday morning. I definitely wouldn't recommend the walk-up and wouldn't do it again, however it worked out okay for us.
