Hopefully I can give a little insight as we are cruise-lovers too...and were just at the RPDC for our first AI experience in March. We really loved the RPDC and had a great time! We would definitely go back. Did it change our cruise-lovin'? NO way! It just made us want to take one of EACH vacation every year! Ours was a Funjet vacation which we booked through Traveloni.com so our transportation to the resort was included through Lomas Travel. Lomas has a booth at the hotel so we had them arrange our all-day tour to Chichen-itza and it turned out to be a great day for $77 each.
We had a Jr. Suite oceanview (Room 252)and loved having the free internet, robes/slippers and on-line check-in. Our room was right above the hot tubs so sometimes it was a bit noisy but with the doors closed, we really didn't hear much. You would be paying for the view so you would hate to hide in a room in the back of any of the buildings. Plus when we checked in on-line we only had our choice of 2 rooms...so that was a bummer.(We wanted the Coba building only..non-smoking).
Our daughter has been to Moon Palace...loved it...but was in awe when she saw our pictures of the RPDC. Her room was nothing like what we had there...plus the great location and awesome beach!
Hope this helps...let me know if you have any questions.
