If not, go to the Windows Control Panel, (choose classic view) and double click Windows Firewall. Turn it off!! Then try Internet Explorer again. If you're still batting zero, look through your list of installed programs to see if you might have some unknown pre-installed security software messing things up. It's possible that one of those utilities is blocking active script. I believe James is running a steroiditized version of PHPBB for the forum engine here. If you enjoy searching for an answer, their forum (phpbb.com) has a wealth of information. Just search for the topic emoticon or smiley. The fact that the smileys work on other forums doesn't mean much because the operational process may be done differently. Worse case scenario, it could be a WindowsXP-SP2 issue or a motherboard chipset issue. I don't see any motherboards from my usual vendors that have built-in firewall software imbedded in the ROM but that doesn't mean yours doesn't. I would at least take a look at your BIOS (enter at boot-up) and view, so you can check that possibility off the list. By the way, at this very moment I'm on a Dell laptop (Intel) with WindowsXP and all of the latest SP2 patches with Microsoft Firewall enabled but no virus protection. Jimmy, thanks for spending so much time on this!!! I really appreciate it. I might have more time to look into this on saturday. I have Norton Internet Security but the settings are not different from what I had on my old computer so I don't believe it has anything to do with it. I still think it's somewhere in the XP-settings. That's why I hate computers where everything is pre-installed... you don't have any idea and control on what's there. It's possible as well that I still have to install something... who knows...
Shantry, I am sure it has nothing to do with Flash either. I think I will buy a book on windows XP first thing saturday morning and then we will see what I find out... ![]() Thanks for all your help and suggestions, you guys are really great!!!!!!!!! |

Andiline,
Just happened to get a call from a client today that was having a scripting/security issue on another Dell laptop (Intel) using WindowsXP-SP2. Windows Firewall was set to OFF but it was equipped with Norton Internet Security. As a part of my testing, I was curious if the smileys would work here... they did when I finally turned everything off in NIS except the SpamBlocker. By the way, you won't see me expressing any love for Norton Internet Security. Jimmy |

So looks like a non-compatibility between INS and Win XP... I will check it out tomorrow.
My contract with Norton is only until the end of January so i can reconsider then whether I use something else. Still, Norton right now deletes 4-5 f my mails per day as they contain virusses and so I can see that it somehow works ![]() Thanks again for all you advices. Have to rush to the office now as there is something which doesn't work and we need to fix that. I will let you know tomorrow what I found out. Last edited by Andiline : 12-17-2004 at 07:41 PM. |
