the Virgin rides again!

If you've spent any time in Mexico during the first couple weeks of December, you've probably noticed celebrations for the Virgin of Guadalupe. She's a big hitter here. Some people make pilgrimages to see the miracle painting of her in Mexico City. Others run or bike long distances with torches to celebrate her. The big celebration day is the 12th. This is the day that dude saw her on the hill and brought the roses down to the non-believers.

To me, it's another chance to witness the parade down 30th Avenue where the Caspar music wagon rolls (La Electrizante Maquina Fantasmal, or the Ghostly Electrified Machine...), blaring music, followed by a bunch of dudes in a pickup hand-launching huge silver bottle rockets into the sky which explode at random heights. Don't look up, you might get a big silver fragment in your eye. I managed to capture a few seconds of footage with my camera (didn't know it took audio too, bonus!) and even grabbed one of them exploding right after launching. Too bad I forgot that you can't turn the camera on its side when you are shooting in movie mode. Who knew?

I'll try to chop it up in After Effects then post a little bit here as my Sunday media project. (after I stuff my jalapeņos and put them on the grill)

the virgin

I remember sitting at ElTacolote about 10 years ago and watching these young adults run by all carrying torches and ran past us and then through the church. It was truly amazing.

We got to witness the parade on Isla Mujeres one year. Loved it. I am a big fan of the Virgin Mary.
