A downside to all this is confusion and down time, of course. On Tuesday morning, the electric company came and took out some old posts of theirs they no longer need on 8th street near us. Unfortunately while this did not result in any interruption of electric service, it turns out that the telephone company (they say legally) and the cable company were piggybacking their services on that post. So we had no cable or phone service for over 48 hours until we personally went and met with the managers of these respective services and got workarounds in place at least for the moment.
So in case anyone has tried to call or fax Playa Maya in the last couple of days and has wondered why didn't bother to answer our phones, that's because we could never hear them ringing and had no way to do so! And in case anybody wanted to know what it's like to try to run a business with infrastructure that can leave a little to be desired, now you have an example. Thankfully it is getting better, however. Steve |

Actually I noted this morning on my walk in that there are basically no overhead wires now on 8th street between 5th Ave and the beach. There are a couple of cables sort of temporarily draped along the sides of buildings, as if they have quite found their permanent places yet, but otherwise it's just the sky and the beach ahead of you on that little walk. Nice.
