Tear down those wires

If you've been to Playa, you've probably noticed alot of cables and wires overhead. Electrical, cable, telephone and I'm sure some improvised things no one even knows about.

Well, you'll notice alot less of those distracting details nowadays and soon, you may not see any at all. Now that most of the electrical and telephone wires have been buried along 5th Avenue, the stripper crews have been going about the business of tearing down the old stuff.

The concrete electrical posts are next. Woo hoo!

Yeah, some of this is finally happening in our area. Typically, we found out because we lost all phone service las Friday and went out checking on it, and found the dreaded Telmex truck on the street. But the guys were accurate in that the service would only be down a couple of hours. They said they were burying overhead cables as part of this general effort, and the following day, the cable people were out knocking out service for a couple of hours and doing the same thing.

Those wires have always been a real eyesore, imo, and the faster they're all buried, the better.

Gotta love a place that hires strippers to do public works projects in the daytime - wise use of resources...

That is great news! All those wire were so ugly and distracting, and even a little scarey My husband did enjoy, though, taking pictures of the "creative" wiring and showing the electricians at work.

In order to preserve the genuine aesthetics and ambience of the PdC; the city has carefully planned to leave overhead wiring in selected areas as designated by the central planning and development oversight committee.

For third world wiring go down Constitution on the other side of the highway. There is nice telephone poles on one side. The wiring to the other side runs down the pole and across the street. By across the street I mean the thin extension cords spiced together are actually laying on the road.

The electricity people came by our place today and notified us that they'd have to cut the power for a couple of hours tomorrow in order to complete the connections for us and our neighbors to be underground.

after watching some of the backhoe operators down there, I can picture a wad of cables and pipe snagged on the bucket teeth the first time there is an underground problem in the street.... overhead utilities aren't such a bad thing in certain respects

While Mike and I were in Playa, and were walking down Calle 10 between 5 and 1 Avenidas, we heard a HUGE explosion! We turned and looked up the street and saw a VAST cloud of thick smoke on 10th just west of Ave 5. Everyone in the immediate area had stopped dead in their tracks. As the smoke cleared, we saw an electrical worker on the top of a ladder leaning against a pole. He wasn't moving. I began to wonder if he was dead. Finally, he started SLOWLY down the ladder to the street....probably counting his blessings that he wasn't electrocuted! Don't know what was being done ~ it looked like lines were being strung from the north side of the street to the south side. I work for the National Electrical Contractors Association, so found the wiring and related work going on sort of interesting..... (To say the least!)
