Well, ask these guys....

JUST when they thought they had done the improbable...

With a sideward glance, Princess Anne CAUGHT them smuggling theirs...
(DAMN those eyes on the side of her head, eh?)

But....one of those guys might be more worth the trouble of trying to smuggle home than an avocodo!

Almost the same restrictions aply when you come into Mexico.
No fresh fruits nor vegetables, meat or cheese are suposed to enter the country without inspection by the sanitary authorities. And by the same reasons, to avoid cross contamination between one country to another.

Imagine everytime my Mom comes to Mexico with all the food that the relatives are sending (cheese, buns, homemade sauces or snacks, etc). Sometimes we are lucky and get to taste them, sometimes is the inspector who gets to eat them.

The trick would be to "process" the avocado in this case, like make a paste or sauce and bottle it in a labeled jar. Before the US allowed mexican avocados to enter that country, the only way to have them was in a sealed jar.

I know what you mean, I use a lot of lime in all my cooking and drinks and here in Florida are sold for 33 cents each ... everytime that my mom comes to visit me she always bring me like 3 kilos of limes in her suitcaise!! hahahaha... so far no problem... normally 1 kilo of limes in mexico go for 7 pesos!! , tell me if is not tempting to do that!!

Exactly! It is so tempting! I would love to bring home lots of limes and mangos and avocados! Produce is just so much better and cheaper there than here. I didn't end up trying to sneak anything home. I just tried to eat lots while I was there!

I can relate, Sarah. Some of the restrictions seem just plain silly sometimes - after all, we grow so many limes, mangos and bananas in Canada - that we must be protective of the crops - but I suppose it's better to err on the side of caution. Things like mad cow have made everybody a bit paranoid. Guess we'll all have to be satisfied with pigging out on the cheap and delicious produce while we're there.

As far as I know, Sarah, yes. Btw... sorry I didn't get to meet you while you were in town. I was resting up in anticipation of all of this week's festivities! We're barely started and I'm already wiped out!

.

We got the green light all the way! Funny though because when we opened our suitcases after checking into the resort we found notices saying that our luggage had been inspected and the taters were strewn throughout the case fully exposed. When Susie posted the count of 9 taters I realized that a few were missing.

The only stop we had was leaving and hubby got stopped, searched our camera bag and that was it.

Today all states in the USA have their borders open to Mexican Avocados. California, Hawaii and another one were the last ones.

Just for your delight.
