Tsunami in the Caribbean or Gulf of Mexico
With the tremendously horrific tragedy that has so recently made headlines the dense cogs in my brain started churning at a modest rate and my curiosity, perhaps a bit morbid, has been sparked. Many may not know that tsunamis can be of a widely varying size and duration, some hardly larger than the standard surf on a given beach while others can cause the incomprehensible devastation we have witnessed via the evening news. When I lived in western <?xml:namespace prefix = st1 ns = "urn:schemas-microsoft-com:office:smarttags" />Washington State many years ago I vaguely remember hearing about a tsunami as a result of an earthquake off the coast of <ST1:pAlaska</ST1:p but it was very small and caused no significant damage that I can recall. Fortunately disasters of such biblical proportions are seldom and rare.
My question posed to the long timers of the region, have there been any such events impacting the PDC area in recent memory, large or small? bba2 For the paranoid among us: are there any planned and btw what will the weather be like when I am there next year, which day should I plan my catamaran trip for and does a pale pasty white guy from the north really need sunscreen, the sun isnt that fierce is it?Last edited by bbA2 : 12-31-2004 at 10:00 PM. |

Bring sunscreen, even if you have olive skin,
& be aware that undersea earthquakes can happen anywhere,any-time.Recently was one in the Caribbean near the western tip of Jamaica, but no tsunamis that I know of. Be prepared,pray.![]() After reading the same thread locked down, why is this still here? I agree with you Karen, but if you want to see tasteless, check out Taquito's post on Teezet's thread on the web-cam!! ![]() Last edited by Softy57 : 01-02-2005 at 08:11 PM. Reason: add |

From what i know the Yucatan peninsula is not a Sismic zone, there are zones with a "possible" danger like Acapulco, where you can feel hard enough earthquakes, but that's on the pacific, so dont worry.

No Tsunami in the Carribean
This is one thing you just don't need to worry about in the Carribean. While there are minor quakes (Mag 4 or less) in the Atlantic, it takes a whole different geology in order to create an earthquake significant enough to generate a Tsunami. The subduction of continental plates just does not occur in the Carribean or Atlantic oceans.
While your concern is quite understandable, given the horror that has just occurred in Asia, it's just something that doesn't happen there. You're more likely to get killed by sunburn induced melanoma. don't worry. Relax, and have a good time. |

Facts?
I may not be as well informed as Morey000,but I read in todays paper about 1/2 of a mountain in the Azores that is guarenteed to fall into the ocean within the next 200 years or so. It is projected that it will create a huge tsunami that will devastate the eastern U.S.A.coast. I also read last week that there is a fault line off of Cape Ann in Massachusetts[where I live] capable of producing an earthquake 0f 7-9 on Richter Scale,The scientist seemed to feel that it "could" cause a tsunami.Perhaps Playadise is safe,I certainly hope so.

I don't believe that there are that many real atheists over here, though. Maybe it also has something to do with people not wanting to be prescribed wat to, and wat not to do, according to churches. On the other hand: our second biggest political party is christian based. Our prime minister is from that party, even. |
