I've been dying to check out these ruins for a couple years now and I'm debating whether I should try to fit it into this trip. They are not very close to Playa really, rather closer to Campeche. Its considered one of the great Mayan ruins that aren't heavily touristed or ecscavated as of yet.

What I'm wondering is if any of the mods have been there and their impressions and how long of a drive is it from Playa to that area if I were to rent a car?

By car expect to spend between 6 to 7 hours.
The best time to get to the ruins is arriving at sunrise time because you can enjoy the jungle and maybe find some wild animals (I saw wild turkeys, spider monkeys and deers. A jaguar would be a biiiiiiiiiig bonus).

There are NO services, not even a lady selling water bottles, sodas neither tacos. Next store is 120 Km in Xpuhil pueblo.

Best thing of it is that there are no crowds to fight. You can be the only person at the top of the pyramid for a while.

Go for it but bring a book about it as there are no guides.
