I stayed in the Akumal section and I liked the resort as a whole. The beach is not AS good as the Barcelo, but it's Ok enough. There ARE sand bags in the water but to me, not that big of a deal. I did happen to sit pool-side at this resort, as opposed to the beach. The Akumal side beach is kind of narrow with not many palapas, it was easier to find a decent spot around the pool and walk to swim in the ocean than find a spot on the beach and walk to the pool.
Know that the Coba section, the newest of the three, is not on the beach. The walk to the beach is farrrrr, but there are trams that run all over the properties.
