8th street to be closed to regular traffic
Fresh out of the meeting, folks: 8th street is to be closed to all regular traffic between 10th Ave and the beach.
This is the word, anyway, and is a result of the parking problems in general due to the number of establishments along that stretch and related issues, such as the persistence on the part of taxis clogging the intersection of 5th Ave and 8th, trying to create an unofficial taxi stand (despite the presence of official taxi stands at the intersections of both 5th Ave and 10th and 5th Ave and 6th, on either side) and problems getting the officials who have been on duty at 10th Ave and 8th to be consistent in (dis)allowing people to pass under the current arrangement with cones and more open policies. According to the comandante -- the head of the transit police -- who met with the management of hotels and some other establishments this morning, poles of the type used at various intersections along 5th Ave will be put in place on the south side of 10th Ave at 8th street, and that they will be removed to allow to pass

Just to follow up on this, everything explained above came true today as of about half an hour ago, with the sole exception that the closure is taking place at the intersection of 5th Ave rather than at 10th (a nice modification). As you can see in the photographic evidence below, tránsito seems perfectly intent on this new policy, as they already have temporary cones in place and traffic cops manning them. They indicate that they'll soon have the red posts in place there as on the other sides of the intersection and at other intersections along 5th.
Miscellany not to be missed: 1st photo: note the lack of overhead wires now down the block to the beach 2nd shot: there's the grossly inaccurate and unhelpful map on the sign on the corner! Steve ![]() |

Our van driver tried to turn onto 8th @ 10th Ave to return us to Playa Maya last week, but the officer shook his finger at him. Our driver then decided to back up a bit to pull over to park and talk to the officer. Even though he looked, he backed over the front of a scooter that was possibly following us too closely. The driver of the scooter was beating on the back of the van for us to move ahead so that she could get unstuck. Meanwhile, three officers witnessed all of it.
Needless to say, our ride ended there. |

Was this with our service? I'd like to know if it was so I can check with them on this incident. However the officers should not have stopped you at either 10th Ave or 5th Ave, as the written policy established and agreed to by their own boss, the comandante de tránsito, specifically states that transportation services delivering passengers are still allowed to come down all the way to the beach.

No, Heather arranged the service for us. We had such a great day and were so sorry for Jesus when this happened. And, Steve, we had a great time at your hotel! I'm not sure if all of the group will make it back next year to Mexico and Playa Maya, but I'm hoping the two of us will. Ruth Ann |
