La Parrilla award
Saw a new sign outside La Parrilla today to the effect that they had won for 2004 evidently the same award Yaxche won for 2003, and which the latter still announces on their own banners: best regional cuisine restaurant.

They have something called the "Mariachi" plate, I think, which gives you a good variety of the best stuff. The cebollas cambray are better at Tango Taco, however. But every time we've been to La Parrilla, I must say the service has been just spot on. Anything needed or requested arrived on the table in under a minute. We even tested that impression a couple of times after noticing it.

I second Ryberg's choice the "Mariachi" plate. |

No reservations required, just show up. La Parilla is absolutely one of my favorite restaurants, as I've said here many times. My favorite is the queso fundido (melted cheese on the English menu). Add chorizo for a nice kick. And be sure to ask for crema agria to put on your tortilla with the queso. YUM! Is it time for me to go to Playa again yet?

You may be thinking of achiote, which I believe is also sometimes written axiote. It usually appears in your food as a reddish powder. Very good stuff. Important spice in the pibil dishes.

My favorite
I like the "crepes with black mushroom" as it appears on the English menu - that is, crepes with huitlacoche. Always tasty.
La Parilla has been in Playa for many years but I haven't been there lately. It's kind of expensive. I wonder if the award is based on the length of the lines in front of the restaurants ![]() |
