You lost me on Matts El Rancho. Sure they might have a good tequila section but the food is merely avg. For Austin its gotta be Polvo's or Curra's for great mex.

Kansas City: La Cocina Del Puerco (good marg's and authintic food/decor), Ponak's for even better marg's, good food - very inexpensive, Cactus Grill - a little suburbia action going on but very good food, decent marg's - works in a pinch.

thats why I qualified the statement, never seen a restaurant with that quantity of fine tequilas. Where is Polvo's ??? never even heard of it. Curra's didn't impress me that much, i'd rather stick to the $5 joints like Herberts

Yes you did qualify it.
Polvos is a tiny little place on s first. Very good margs with fresh lime juice,. Good looking little salsa bar. Bunch of cool stuff on menu.

I usually stick with the little $5 joints as well. I'll certainly give Heberts a shot if and when I get to SM.

The tequila selection at Hugo's in Houston is great, so is marie selma's. Both are more high end with Hugo's being very high end.

I'm almost embarassed to mention Maria Taco Express in Austin, but the migas tacos with chorizo is awesome.

Pepe's and Mitos in Deep Ellum. Great food!!! Great Tacos el Pasture. Slim loves their catfish..so far everything we have tried has been outstanding. We sit on the patio to people watch..even feels like PDC. They have a full bar but haven't tried their drinks. We can drink free at my nephews clubs around the corner.
I still love Herrerras..best hole in the wall but haven't been there in a long time.

People watching is fun!!

I've been to Aca y Alla in deep ellum. Eveyone just loves "Monica" if you know who that is. Herreras is good too, especially the one off Josey Rd. I work in Addison & in Farmers Branch, Carrollton there have been all kinds of new mom & pop "slides" opening. Another good slide for tacos is on Harry Hines called El Paisado's for tacos. I hit them all !!!

Hey Cancun,
since you work in the twin cities area check out Nuevo Leon. The best authentic mexican food north of IH635. The goat cheese is to die for.

I have a friend tell me that La Cocina de Michoacana does interior Mexican food very well. It is up in Cedar Park I think, but this person who is very respectful of mexican cousine says that it is a great find. You might want to look it up and give it a try.

Here in Houston, it really depends on what kind of Mexican food you want.

Picos is great for Tex Mex and some authentic dishes as well.
El Tiempo is another fave - 2 margaritas will have you wobbling as you leave!
Chuy's is another fave - started in Austin. Can't beat the Green Chile Festival! They even celebrate Elvis' birthday!

Another place which is a chain, but very close to our house is Gringo's. It's Tex Mex and the food is very consistent.

The best mexican I have eaten outside of MX???? Must be Break for the Border in LONDON....

Still there was a mexican place in Denver which whilst I dont recall the name, and actually the food was just OK, did have its own indoor seventy foot high cliff from which they had divers doing the Acapulco style diving... AMAZING!

Otilla's on Long Point is very good and good interior Mexico food, not very Tex-Mex. I love Chuys, and have been eating (and drinking) there at the original location in Austin since I was an undergrad back in the early 80s. Chuys is VERY Tex-Mex!!!

The best/coolest Mexican food I ever ate was at a place in Laredo when I was in college. They specialty was roasted cabrito. We ordered it. We got a whole rear quarter of a goat with a stack of tortillas and some salsa. AWESOME!
