Dos Amigos
Dos Amigos is owned by two partners, Enrique, the chef is from San Luis Posoti, Mexico and Mauricio his partner is from Ecuador. They have been friends for years opened the restaurant about 8 years ago. Everyone who works in the restaurant is family. They have the best guacamole north of Cancun, the menu is all authentic recipes that they have sourced and traveled to Mexico to research. For anyone in Toronto, they are on Bathurst, north of Dupont and just opened their patio for a couple of hours today with the balmy weather we had this weekend.

Port Washington, WI - Beanie's Mexican Cantina. It's got a giant tree behind the bar.......the bar with "swings"! Yep! It's a swing bar!!! Love it. margaritas are big and fresh, just had a cactus juice margarita the other day...and the food is pretty decent. They make a spicy shrimp over coconut rice that is to die for!! Don't know how authentic it is, but its damn good!

Two categories:
Cheap Mexican food: Restaurante Taxco, which is about a mile from my house. Great food for a great price. Notsobad tequila selection. $13 60oz pitchers, which they do REALLY well with cheep tequila. We can walk to it and have a few pitchers and be very happy. Expensive Mexican food: Agave. One of the best tequila selections in town. Great food too. But both are very very very expensive. But its worth it. It's about 30 minutes away, so we have to plan to go to this one. And you have to make reservations. |

Frontera Grill/Topolobampo
Two years ago June the Spousal Unit and I had 2 phenomenal meals at Rick Bayless' two places in Chicago.
We had lunch at Frontera Grill, and it was so good that we walked over to the maitre d and reserved space at the upscale sister, Topolobampo, for the Chef's Tasting Menu. Frontera was wonderful, Topo was ethereal. One of the courses was broiled lobster in mole sauce. I couldn't imagine how broiled lobster could come to the table without being overcooked, and I couldn't imagine how lobster could hold its own against mole sauce. The lobster was the spiny lobster that you'd find in QRoo (and here in Florida), split in half lengthwise. It was cooked to perfection - not served as sushi, not at all rubbery or dired out. And the rich lobster held its own against the mole; the sauce didn't eclipse it at al. The wine pairing for each course was seamless. Now a bit closer to home, there's a little diner-type place called El Toro Negro in Pinellas Park that is always full of Mexican people that serves tons of good food very inexpensively. There's also a significant Mexican population in Clearwater, but that's too much of a hike with El Toro so close at hand. B |

We have some restaurants that are owned by some families from Ameca, Jalisco that are pretty good. Authentic if you will. That is a word that drives me crazy. People will even go to Mexico and say that they ate in an authentic Mexican restaurant. Of course its authentic. Mexican food cooked by Mexican people from Mexico or even while you're in Mexico. Sorry. I should have put that on the rant thread.
We also have lots of Basque restaurants here. |
