I'll certainly tell Tank-Ha to expect trouble starting the 8th too (happens to be the day I leave )

About the wetsuit, I would take the shorty back and pick up a full. When diving for a week your core temp will drop over the week.

I was over in Coz last week on a cruise (long story) and wife and I did a 2 tank. I have a 3 mm full and was nice and warm. 2 of the 3 with shorties didn't get back in for 2nd dive as they were shivering and teeth chattering.

Remember, if you get hot on a dive you can unzip a bit and let water in to cool off, but if you are cold, not much you can do at 65 ft other than end dive.

Just my 2 cents.

Good advice. I've been struggling with this. I am one of those peeps with "antifreeze" in my veins though. I did my checkout dives in Cancun in just a swimsuit on SpringBreak and was just fine. I dive in New England waters that range between 53-70°F (5mm fullsuit plus hooded 3mm vest). Wore a shorty last time in Playa and was plenty warm (just 2 dives one day though). I'll snorkel for a couple hours at a time in just a swinsuit. I was thinking about more long term though: If I go to Florida or or some other Carribean places I would need the full, but my 5mm would be too heavy. Then there's always the jellyfish. An d like you say, diving for an entire week.... Piss, guess I'll probably be going to the dive shop Sat and making an exchange, hope they didn't sell the fullsuit in my size that they ordered for me (along with the shorty)

Except for the one time in the Cenotes, I've never worn a wet suit along the Yucatan, with probably 50 dives. Over my nearly 60 years, I've added several layers of natural "insulation" to my frame! I do wear a T-shirt when diving, and take a large towel to wrap in when first out of the water. It's those "under-fed" divers that have trouble with the cold. This last Fall, on the Ningaloo Reef in western Australia, I'm very glad they talked me into a 5mm suit! Being cold was not fun - if not dangerous.

your core temperature will not drop during the week, but Itex is right, you can always unzip a bit but you can't go the other way.

Last year I dove with "Cozumel Scuba Diving with Alison". I would highly recommend her and I just booked a dive with her for next month. She has a small boat so it is very personable and her rates are very reasonable. Here is her website URL:
http://www.scubawithalison.com/

I just remembered, posting someone's e-mail in a public forum is bad etiquette, you can get it from her website.
Itex, would you please remove it from yours too?

Ross

Dove with Dive Mike about two years ago ... only got one day of diving in because of the weather, but we were very pleased with the dives and Mike's operation.

Does anyone have an idea if most dive shops rent cameras? If so, any idea on the price? And the quality of the unit, do they have strobes? Are they Nikonos or some other like Sea-Sea....?

I too can give Alison a thumbs up. I tried booking her last week, but she was full for months as it was Carnival week. Book early as she is popular.

you'd be suprised to find out how easy it is to become a divemaster

edit: I should say that being a good divemaster doesn't really require an extensive physiological understanding of heat and mass transfer in the diver beyond recognizing problems and dealing with them.

The rescue classes I just went through, on my way to Divemaster, by no means was easy. Maybe I need to find some easier instructors. Although when your brother is also an instructor and they know him they maybe harder on you. all I know is that was the toughest class, physical and mental I have ever been in.

I am quite glad that rescue diver is a hard course. You may need to save a life with it someday. I certainly wouldn't feel happy saving someone with only Peak Performance Bouyancy and Fish ID under my belt. Easy courses are just there to enhance the experience and increase the PADI coffers.

Back on thread: Is there any diving further south towards Akumal? Or do the good sites finish at Tortuga and Baracuda?

Crazyday,

yep there is. Dive in Puerto Aventuras. I used to work there first- the reefs down there are easy to dive and are more beautiful than the shallow ones in PdC. Or at least that is my opinion. Nothing like Barracuda or Tarpon/Tortuga down there- but nice coral formations and lots of smaller things going on.
There is one reef with formations that make a little arch to dive through- and sometimes that arch is filled with sardines......quite funny. Usually then a barracuda shows up......and they are gone within a few days, leaving the barracuda looking like a swimming football.
IF I'd be on vaction in that area I'd surely do my shallow dives in Puerto and the deeper ones with bigger fish in Playa. But that is just my personal opinion.
