All I know is almost every AI has hobie cats for there guests. I bet you could flash some money in there face for a 1/2-1 hr. session and you would be set to go. I dont know of any rentals available in town, but ive never looked either. At the AI's weve been to, the watersports equipment has been offered by a private company that contracts with the resort to offer the equipment. Good luck on getting a better answer.

Jibless Hobie Cat Rentals

They have posted hourly rental rates - I asked and they would rent for 4 hrs for the price of three. I'm sorry I don't remember the actual hourly rate.

But - these hobies do not have jibs! So there's no way to backwind the jib to come about in high winds or big waves.

One day last summer I went *way* too far out. All of a sudden the water wasn't light blue any more but a dark black/blue and the waves were much higher than they were several hundred yards from the beach. The north wind was very flukey - stiff on top of the waves and totally calm in the troughs. I tried to come about several times and got stuck each time so I had to fall off and keep going out to sea. The waves were too steep (and the wind too flukey) for me to attempt a gybe and I wasn't sure if I could be seen from shore if I capsized. (This is when I could really have used a backwindable jib.) After 5 or 10 minutes of sailing out to sea with the main fully out (and thinking that I'd have to steer a bit more north to hit Cuzumel) I finally saw a couple of very close together waves coming, sheeted in to build up speed and finally came about as the two waves came together into a big wide wave with a kind of flat spot on top. I skeedaddled back west and when I hit the light blue water where the waves were much wider and not as high sheeted fully in and sailed right back to the beach as fast as I could. Caught a wave and surfed right onto the beach! Then I tried to act casual as I walked back to our palapa with *very* weak knees.
