Perhaps it should have been said to Hunter:

"Step away from the bong AND put the GUN down..."

"Step away from the ether bottle" may have been more appropriate, doubt weed did much for him in his latter years

I don't care what you did in life, what greatness you accomplished etc. By putting a bullet in your own head your are no better then any "armed and dangerous" criminal.
Some would say "but hey, at least he just shot himself.." He would have shot you too if you walked in on him.....

What a shame.
I totally disagree with this and think perhaps you really don't understand what Thompson was going through the last few years of his life.

I read an article in Saturday's paper about how he usually started his day at 5:00PM with some jello drizzled with grand marnier and tequila. Now that's an interesting breakfast.

Obviously I don't. Whatever it was, drinking Drano, snorting Wabasi etc does not justify shooting yourself in the head.

Ok, so he was going through a rough few years. He found the world has changed and his "generation" has aged, died, or was forced to change. His 15 min were up.

Ok, move on, write a book. Like 7 of 9 says from Star Trek "you will adapt".

PS: He could have just moved to Key West...he would be in his element!

Maybe Thompson just wasn't a big Star Trek fan.
