Any info out there re a new Riu Palace in Playacar?

I just read that there is a new Riu Palace in Playa Del Carmen, set to open in Feb. /06.

Does anyone out there have any info on this? Exactly where is it? Someone said it was beside the Riu Playacar but this was argued by another. Why would there be two Palaces in the same area?

Any info would be appreciated.

Thanks, Lois

Yes it is to be called Riu Palace Riviera Maya and is being built between the Reef Club and the Club Viva Azteca in Playacar. Its not directly beside the Riu playacar but it is within walking distance.

Info:

* Opening February 2006
* Located in the Yucatan peninsula, 3 km / 1.8 miles from Playa del Carmen
* Within the resort area Playacar along with the hotels Riu Yucatan, Riu Playacar, ClubHotel Riu Tequila and the Riu Palace Mexico

There is more detailed information at www.riu.com

Lois, you're going to have to book there now and forget the RH. Wouldn't it be funny if Francisco moved down as well? Think we'll have to do the old Palace again in Dec and then maybe there will be some deals when the new one opens. They did that at the one in Cabo last year. I'd bet also they'll be upgrading many guests at the Tequila, Playacar and Yucutan just like they did for Caribe and Cancun when the Las Americas opened.

I don't understand why Riu want to put another Palace in......is it to give Palace people somewhere with exchange privs but without them having to rub shoulders with the riff raff ??!

Just realised where this is being built now - massive site!

Just returned from the RIU Palace Mexico the last week in January. The ground has been broken and construction has begun for the new RIU Palace Maya. As stated by others, the location is a short distance up the street from the original Palace.

Why another Riu Palace?...

My guess is they're following the lead of Iberostar, building each resort more upscale than the last...

Thanks all for the replys.

Hey, Bob
Not sure if funny is the word re Fransisco (I'm somwhere between embarrased and still smarting). You go first to the new one and let me know!!
I'm sure waiting to hear reports as to what it's like.

If you hear any gossip re good deals - let me know.
