Through the military and recently I've been to quite a few places in the world. Everywhere you go you'll find people that are out there to exploit kids just for their own welfare. In the Phillipines there are many instances of people who pretend that they are crippled, and go about beggin. However after the day is over, they get out of their wheel chairs, make shift crutches and walk around just like you and I do. Or they'll come up to you, hey you like my sisiter. Which I think is pretty disgusting, but that is their way of life over there and many places including Mexico are no different. When some government big shot in Mexico tells you you shouldn't give kids money, because it discourages them from going to school. If a big shot government person anywhere told me that, I'd ask him, then why do you charge kids 5 bucks a day to go to school ? |

Suzanne,
I think what you did was great. It was very in the moment and showed a willingness to help those less fortunate. I have struggled with giving money or other trinkets to children in the street when my heart wishes they were in school. While doing research for a trip a few years ago I read on another forum of a children's library in Akumal and their " wish list " . I took one less piece of luggage and filled a box full of things that the library needed. Construction paper, crayons, pencils, glue and other craft items. We dropped the box of stuff off at the library. The response was overwhelming and brought a tear to my eye. I know it wasn't school but I felt the kids were getting something out of their visits to this little library. My husband and I are returning in April and once again we will bring a box to the library. It isn't much but it is something and I know it is appreciated. Yodgo |

I agree that Suzanne did a great thing and this kind of actions help others a lot. I see no harm at all giving kids some nice clothes or other usefull things, when they have so much less most of us grew and grow up with.
Money not, but clothes, toys, school supplies and other usefull things can make a big difference to some people here, so if you feel like doing it, I would personally encourage you to keep on doing this, because it`s a great thing. I live in Playa and we regularly give away clothes and other stuff we donīt need anymore to people in need. Helping each other out is what it`s about in the world, don`t you think? |

Great topic, ALMOST as good as boobs on the beach. Really really debatable topic.
In Denver there are pan handlers at most freeway offramps. I saw one a joker using a handicap walker as a prop fold it up and run off with his days earnings. I asked myself why would someone do such a thing? Well, because we alow it. We hand out $$ based on an emotional response without looking at the real picture. I would not give anyone (female, child, handicap) anything if they were asking, begging, and/or pressuring me for it. I travel all over the world and this is the oldest scam there is, all countries do it to some degree trying to take advantage of the emotional US tourist. You cannot save the world. If you want to make yourself feel good, give to a good charity, they know how to get the goods to the people that really need it. Giving handouts to the locals at every port encourages them to run up to me when I am on vacation and hound me for a free ride. Just one man's opinion. PS Try spending some time in downtown Montiqo Bay and see the real picture. |

A few months ago, I noticed a gentleman at a local shopping mall in So Cal. He setup a small chair and sign, changed from a nice shirt to a tattered shirt, messed up his hair, put on grimy hat. He sat himself down on the island next to the exit to the street, stashed his nice clothes in bag under the seat. I couldn't believe what I was seeing. No way those cars that saw him would give anything, but in a few minutes with a fresh set of cars, he began collecting. I'll bet he brings in a few hundred a day tax free.
