San Carlos Mexico Photos

Just got back last night from a wonderful 4 day get-away.

We went to our 'local' part of Mexico, about a 6 hr drive from Tucson.

I usually check out the board from San Carlos, and have met a few fishing people thru it. One fellow needed something transported from Tucson, so I called him before we left and made arrangements to pick it up for him.

I got a little carried away in my haste to arrive, and got pulled over by a Federale for speeding, 135 in a 120 zone. He was super nice, shook my hand and told me to slow down. YES Sir...and we were back on our way.

Turns out this fellow I'm carrying rolls of plastic for owns one of the nicest boats in town. A 34 ft. Luhr's...sportfishing boat. We met him upon arrival, and he offered to take us fishing on Sat. He also owns one of the nicest houses in the area. 'Casa De Fiesta' Talkin' about a BEAUTIFUL house, right on the water! Complete with Palapas!

While out fishing we came across some Finback Whales spouting off, not too far from the boat. We went over and checked them out, got as close as 100 ft. or so from them. They grow to a length of 80 ft, and can get up to 80 tons. Pretty good size Whales!

On the way back from S.C we stopped in Magdalena. The Zocalo was packed being a Sunday. We had lunch, and just looked around. We found the final resting spot Of Padre Kino. He built Catholic Missions all thru northern Mexico, and southern Az. Including San Xavier here in Tucson, and the Magdalen mission.

We stayed right in town, at Gringo Pete's. I was amazed to find 'weeds' growing right out front of the hotel, upon futher inspection....they weren't just regular 'weeds' either!

That is about when I first started going to San Carlos also. Things have changed over the yrs. They are about to start construction on a cruise ship pier. Prices are risen dramatically in the last few yrs.

You can still find good deals though.

Beautiful pics, as usual. My Tucsonian cousin goes to Rocky Point quite a bit. Is San Carlos south of there?

San Carlos is almost straight south from Tucson. Where as Rocky Point is West, a bit. You would use a different route also. It takes about 2 hours longer to get to San Carlos. (6 hrs)

If your cousin ever goes to San Carlos, she'll never go back to Rocky Point. It's a dramatic difference. We used to go to Rocky Point before discovering S.C.

Great pics, Rixx. A buddy of mine just went across the Sea of Cortez in his sea kayak. Took three days, camped on a couple of islands, lots of whales. He gave us the same slide show he is giving at local mountain gear shops in the future. Beautiful area.
Thanks for sharing.

Thanks for sharing.

He's one TOUGH guy!! Must have been a custom made kayak? I would think he needed plenty of room for his 'huevos'!! It's an 80 mile trip across, one way.

The Sea Of Cortez can be very smooth in the AM, and then in the afternoon the winds COME! I have seen many rough conditions in a large boat, it'll beat you to death.

He must have departed close to the Guaymus area, most of the Islands are around there. It is a beautiful area!

We are actually thinking of buying some property or house there, after watching the prices rise over the years. And it's convenient for people living in southern Az. Prices still arent out of sight, we looked at a 2 br house up on the hill...GREAT view, for 150 K.

Ask him if he saw any of the giant squid? The boat captains aren't afraid of the sharks, they are afraid of the squid! National Geographic filmed a special about them. They get HUGE, 8 footers are common. And they will attack swimmers, divers, whatever.

I bet that was an interesting trip!!

I just checked out a map. I'm sure that Jimmy must have been to San Carlos before as it looks like it's pretty much on the way to his mother's hometown of Cosala, Sinaloa (a 14 hour drive from Tucson- I did it once), where he and his family still visit several times a year.
I think he just probably goes to Rocky Point for quick weekend getaways as it's closer.
San Carlos sure does look beautiful.
