Viva Azteca
I stayed at the Azteca last summer. Im sorry I don't have a room recomendation because I can't remember our number. But some of the rooms we walked by on the first floor had chairs outside so you could sit. Our room had a fridge in the closet with tonic, beer and water.
As for the next levels up the balcony is only big enough to stand. Chairs do not fit on the little balcony. The Azteca is small and compact which we really liked. We didn't get to try the specialty rest. because we had small ones with us. Chairs at the beach and pool did fill up early. We actually saw a fight between some folks on the beach. It was a heated arguement. Be careful around the pool area those tiles get very very slippery. We saw a gentleman fall and split his head open. This is not a fancy resort. It's very simple. They had pool activities every day and stuff on the beach. Those who participated looked like they had fun. You can view my pictures in the multimedia section. |

thanks, it will be 4 of us gals taking on some R & R. I will just keep my fingers crossed.
Maybe I request the 1st floor. what do ya think? I just didn't want to be near the lobby since I have heard you hear the noise up and down the stairwells, and someone else mentioned noise from the shows (that doesn't matter to us, we won't be asleep then!) Any advice would be good Thanks again, I hope you all had a blast, the pics of your kiddos are cute.

My suggestion is to go with the Maya instead unless you REALLY want a quiet resort. The Maya had a lot more things to do when we were there back in December and a lot of people from the Azteca came over each day to have fun. We walked over to the Azteca and were not too impressed. Just my humble opinion. You'll have a good time where ever you choose to stay in Playa.

The beaches were fine. There is some erosion but it wasn't a big deal. You'll probably meet a lot of really neat people at the beach and especially around the swim up bar in the pool. Lots and lots of Europeans which I always fine interesting. Feel free to send me a PM if you would like more info. By the way, the pic in my Avatar was taken at sunrise at the Viva Maya. |

Viva Azteca Advice
Hi! We (fiance and I) stayed there last August had a blast. Request a room on the first level by the pool. It's closest to the beach and you'll be able to sit on your little porch and come and go as you please. (see pic!)
Definitely go to the Viva Cafe in town. It was $5 extra but SO worth it. Great food and desserts. Azteca was great because there were things to do if you wanted to, or you could just relax and be left alone. You can always walk down to the Maya (reccomend Portofino restaurant there -- make a reservation) and to the shops down the road. We also borrowed bikes from Azteca and road all around PDC one day! Good luck! Have fun Beth http://mysite.verizon.net/bethharrison/images/patio.jpg |

Rooms
Well the 24-hour bar is closest to the entrance/dining room which means it's furthest from the beach. If you get a room up this way it will almost definitely be a garden view (or air conditioner of the next hotel over??). Personally I'd go for the one closer to the pool/beach! Plus there is the pool bar which is open almost the whole day, maybe closes around dinner time? They have food/snacks up there too incase you wanted lunch but didn't want to change to go to the dining room. After the pool bar closed it wasn't a far walk to the 24 hour bar anyways, since the Azteca is small.
