smily faces?

I tried using smilies in my signature, but they just were shown as colon,parenthesis? Am I doing something wrong?

it must be something to do with the signature, as it worked in the body of the text. Later. (formerly c xort, didn't like that one, sorry.)

I just edited my post and they showed up on my signature. go figure?
