Beach Erosion at RH
Hi All. My husband and I are soooo looking forward to our first trip to Mexico and RH in April. I know we'll have a great time as always but we are big beach people and I'm a little concerned that there is none. Does this erosion problem extend up and down from RH or would we be able to walk to a beach in better condition at another resort? Thanks for any insight.

Kbuzz,
I am in the same boat...though we are staying at the Allegro in mid-April. There are quite a few threads about the erosion issues but none specifically about being able to walk on beach to other beaches. So if anyone can answer Kbuzz'z question, that would really help us both out! Thanks! |

The erosion is really bad in front of the Royal Hideaway, but we're big beach people too and it didn't ruin our trip at all. We specifically chose the Royal Hideaway because we thought it had a great beach. I have to admit, that the first day we were there I was really upset about it, but I did get used to it and it really wasn't as bad as it seemed at first. We ended up finding a great place to set up for the day on the beach in front of the hotel. We really didn't find it incovenient to go down the stairs to swim in the ocean. The swimming was fine. We took many long walks down the beach and it's a little tougher walking, but it was still a beautiful beach. The Royal Hideaway was handling the erosion much better than any of the other hotels on that strip. Some of the "family resorts" didn't have stairs built so you had jump down a sand embankment to get to the ocean. Then there would be kids standing at the top of the embankment pushing the sand down helping the erosion along. That really made me mad.
I'm sure you will have a great time! Antonio's the MAN on the beach and he'll take good care of you. Make sure you try a mango margarita, a mexican lemonade, and a mojito! Let me know if you have other questions. |

Thanks for the replies. I'm not going to worry about it as I've read nothing but great things about PDC and RH!! Any where that's not New England right now has gotta be good. I'll be sure to write a trip report when I get back.

Snuz,
That is directly in front of the Royal Hideaway. kbuzz65, You are absolutely right that there is nothing to worry about. Royal Hideaway has exceeded both my wife and my expectations and we have travelled extensively! Playa del Carmen is just fantastic as well. We found it very difficult this past trip because we stayed at such a luxurious resort that it was hard to leave but Playa is so much fun that you cannot stay away from her. We did manage to make it into town 4 times and enjoyed every minute. |

We were just there Feb. 27-March 3, and the pictures above accurately portray what the beach looks like now, except they put in a lot of sandbags to keep down further erosion. But you can walk for quite a ways down the beach if you want, there is plenty of room on the remaining beach for all the guests, and it's a wonderful resort. We would gladly go back even if it had no beach!

Royal Hideaway
Here's another recent pic taken by Christine of the Royal Hideaway.
<img src="http://www.buck-a-meg.com/duval2/BaM/gallery/tn/mini-Royal%20Hideaway%209.jpg"> I hear that once you get past the Riu Palace beach improves and it is actually larger than ever at Gala. |

I have just realised I asked that question a month or so ago and all seemed fine then so hopefully it wont be too much different. It isn't a major problem but due to the fact I have never been to the Caribbean before I would hate the beach to be really effected....... ah well.
