Swim with the dolphins at Xel-Ha or Xcaret

:-? I will be vacationing in Playa del Carmen in October and have learned a great deal of information from these forums as well as the site. We would like to swim with the dolphins and I am leaning toward Xel-Ha because of the responses to a post I read. However it appears that Xel-Ha charges $90.00 for the Interactive with the dolphins while Xecart it is $65.00 and swim for $90.00 (1 hr. session). Is there a difference in the programs? Thanks for your help.

Swimmin with them dolphins...

I can't comment on Xcaret, but my family went to Xel-ha. They have two programs -- a short 15 minute program and a longer (60 minute, I think) program. My family did the short program, which I think was about $15USD per person. You get to pet the dolphins, learn a bit about them, and give them hand signals for a couple of tricks. Kids loved it. We watched a group doing the longer program, and it is really cool. You get to swim with the dolphins and do tricks with them (the one we saw you laid on your stomach in the water, and two dolphins came up behind you and pushed your feet, while you do the superman pose).

Dophin Discovery has a web site that explains what each of the 'swims' include. worth checking out.

swim with the dolphins

Thank you to all the people who took the time to respond. Your comments are really helping us to make up our minds and provide us with a little confidence as we get to vacation in Playa del Carmen for the first time. This site has been invaluable!

Kathy:

I can only comment on Xcaret. Spend the $90, it is worth it. You get to interact up close and personal. You get to have two dolphins push you (each one pushing on the bottom of your feet). You go so fast that the upper two thirds of your body comes up and out of the water! (You are in a standing position with your arms out. (Not scary). I was pretty skeptical before we went. My wife signed us up on-line before leaving. I'm glad she pushed for it. The $65 experience looked pretty dull. The dolphins seemed happy and well cared for.
