Bus from PdC Bus Station to Xel-Ha??

I grabbed a Xel-Ha brochure at the hotel before we left and gave it a read-through this morning. Was surprised to see under "How to Get There" the following: "By public bus departing from the main bus stations in either downtown Cancun or Playa del Carmen".

Can't seem to locate a bus schedule either here or on web, although who knows how often it may change.

Also... could the "public bus" be referring to the colectivos? And... can you pick up a colectivo at the PdC bus station (which bus station, as I hear there are two?) or do you have to play chicken with them out on 307?? ("Oh, honey.... throw your body out in front of that speeding white van to make him stop for us...")

Thanks.

Karen, I definately noticed Xel Ha as being one of the destinations for the bus from PDC when I was there in January. Not sure if Mayab or Riviera was the company, but it is definately a daily departure in the early morning as I remembered considering it for a day trip. Not sure of how many departures they may have.....this bus station is on the corner of La Quinta and around 2nd street I believe...you can't miss it...

We used the Pdc bus to XelHa and it went well. On the way there ,they actually drive down to the entrance, on the way back you have to go out to the highway. I think the best way would be to take the bus there and the collectivo back. There was a collectivo at the entrance went we left.

Thanks so much, Jacko and Voyager!!!

We want to spend a nice long full day at Xel-Ha in May, and taking a scheduled bus out of Playa will be a smoother, easier way to start off the day (thanks for saying which one it is... I remember walking by it a couple of times last week).

And, Voyager, grabbing a colectivo homeward right at Xel-Ha sounds like a plan to me!! Saves a few bucks too! ('specially since we'll be paying out $10 just to get a cab into Playa and back from the Iberostar Tucan).

Thanks again!!!

If you check out Xel-ha's website, I'm pretty sure they offer specific information about bus transportation to and from.

If not, search for posts written by "Mave". She posted a photo of the bus schedule.

When we visited on New Year's Day 05 we took a collectivo down to Xelha, which was no problem. You would find Tulum-bound collectivos on Calle 2 between Aves 15 and 20. I highly recommend taking a collectivo down. The walk from 307 is fairly pleasant, and paved all the way, through a jungle setting. Maybe a half mile? Certainly no more than that.

We took a collectivo back, as well, which I'm not sure I would recommend. Here's what happened to us last time: first of all, there were 4 of us; we were among the last people out of the park, it was a "low attendance" day, it was getting dark ... the jungly walk back suddenly sprouted lots of mosquito action, and it was pitch dark by the time we were on 307. The collectivos going northbound originate in Tulum, and are packed full when they leave Tulum, and there aren't many stops where people would get off before Xelha. So we had to wait a darned long time before we got a collectivo, and that was only because a passing collectivo driver took pity on us (two kids with us) and called back for an emptier collectivo to come get us. Like a minute after we got into the van, the skies opened up. Whew!
(Now, if it's only two of you, and since the days are now longer, maybe you wouldn't have any problem)

If it were me, I would take a collectivo down, and investigate taking the bus back (I have to find out how to do that myself!), or spring for a cab back. One disadvantage of the bus on the way down is I don't think there is one scheduled that would get you there right as Xelha opens; but the collectivos start running certainly by 7 am. So you can time it (about 1/2 hour trip), to be there before any crowds. Find out, too, when the last bus out of Xelha is; I think it may be 4:30, which would be cutting your day short.

Thanks, MWC!!! I was wondering how early that first bus to Xel-Ha would be, and we would want to get a very early jump on the day to beat the crowds.

As for the return trip, if it looks like colectivos are lacking, I think we'd opt to spring for a cab for the ride back.

I'll go see if I can find Mave's report with that schedule.

EDIT: Found Mave's photo of the bus schedule (THANKS, MAVE!!!) Although it's a little hard to decipher, it looks like the first bus to Xel-Ha isn't until 9:20, and we want to be there when the place opens. So, I guess it'll be the colectivo's for us!! Thanks again for the tips, MWC!!! Sure appreciate it!

We did this last year. The bus from the Bus Station to Xel-Ha and a colectivo back. I think the first bus left the Bus Station in Playa at 9 am.

Karen, this site has packages to Xel-ha which include transport. I think it was about $70.00 for the AI package with transport. I think we will probably book this way.
