If on a comida corrida menu you see pollo alemendros, definitely order that. It's chicken in an almond sauce, more savory than spicy, and was one of my favorite meals last time. I had it a La Casa de Piedra, which is right next to Los Alemendros ... and is another place that doesn't get nearly enough "air time" here.

More about tortas.

I forgot, silly me or Mr. Altzheimer's attack.

More torta variations: Cubana - everything fits, traditionally will be Ham, baked pork loin, cheese, egg. Or what the owner/chef of the place decides is a "Cubana". I have seen variations with as many as 9 different ingredients without including the veggies. Funny fact, in Cuba, there are no Tortas Cubanas, they (if they have them) are called Mexican tortas.

About cheese. Normally you won't get cheese included in your torta. Some places will offer you the addition of cheese on any torta by a modical fee, but most important, the cheese can be in three different styles: blanco (fresh white cheese), quesillo / queso oaxaca (similiar to Motzarella but with more flavor and is wound in balls, when heated it shreads and becomes elastic like foundue) and finally americano/amarillo (cheedar cheese). Find out which one (or all) they use for the tortas, my recomendation is quesillo, is like having a Queso Fundido in your torta.

During Easter, as most of the population is Catholic beef and pork are avoided and there will come the Ensalada de Atun (tuna salad) tortas, the bacalao, or other fish varieties ones, this will have no beans on the recipe and depending on the preparation of the fish they will have no veggies either.

When ordering Cochinita Pibil by the bus station you can get a Torta de Cochinita or Torta de Relleno Negro, this will be served in a portion of a baguette (called Frances in Yucatan) with no veggies added.

Very thorough list of food word translations. I will never remember even half of these!

Thanks, Denisea, for the great food quizzes! I was surprised how many of them I knew or could figure out. But best of all, I'm actually learning something (although my employer would probably prefer that I be working!). When I can bear to tear myself away from the beach cam, I'm going back to the ones I haven't tried yet.
14 days and we'll be in Playa!

We went to a restaurant in playa once (don't remember where) and kept asking the waitress "how do you say that" in spanish for all of the different breakfast items. Finally she brought out a large plate with all kinds of different breakfast foods and gave us a spanish lesson. Really cool. I still remember all of the things that she taught us.

Nosy? Nah, I think perhaps inquisitive... which is an excellent trait to possess. The neat thing about hanging out around here is that you're pretty much guaranteed to learn something new everyday. Hope you don't have too many pre-test jitters. Don't worry... Playa is probably the easiest test you'll ever take... and I don't know anyone who's ever failed.

And the best part about learning about food and booze? The homework!! I've flunked out of plenty of courses and had to repeat. Tsk-tsk-tsk...what a hardship. Obviously, more study required, and with a tutor like D, you can't go wrong. Please...may I be kept after school?

Comida Corrida

This is a really cool thread. I had a little spanish in school, and lived in Texas for 16 years, so I have picked up a little spanish along the way, but find many menu items that leave me wondering.

Speaking of wondering, I have seen the term Comida Corrida several places. Taking it in the context it is used, I think it is like a combination platter, or daily special that includes several preselected courses. Am I even close?

I cheated and here is a pic of a Torta Hawaiian, not like they do tortas in Hawaii, but that is the name for combinations including ham, pineapple and cheese.

I am enjoying the quizzes, I took 3 years of spanish in highschool (diez anos ago) because it was the spanish teachers first years and she was HOTTTTTTTTTT.

Once we replaced her lotion she used everyday, we filled it with elmers glue. She was peeling glue off for hours.
