To Akumal?

Hello folks. We're going to Akumal, from Secrets Capri, for a day trip. What is the best way to get there? The dive shop said best way was rental car....but if we won't be renting a car for our short visit to PDC, it doesn't seem worth it to rent one just for one day. Any transport tips? Thanks.

Cab is the easiest, colectivo is the cheapest (besides, of course, hitchhiking, which I don't recommend).

Thanks Heather. Any idea of a rough estimate for the one-way fare to Akumal?

Click here for the taxi rate sheet from Playa del Carmen. Of course, it will be a bit more since you are leaving from Secrets Capri.

thanks. saw that someone else just posted a link to that rate sheet - which I supposedly shoulda have been able to find myself. sorry for the trouble.

best to pay cabs in pesos or in US$?

i have been lurking on many msg boards for about 2 months and now that I am about 3 weeks away from my trip, I am now getting excited and therefore my generally daily dosage of spaciness is increased to such a level whereby I forget all of the good posts/info that I have read and I guess opt for the immediate satisfaction of a playa peep response.

Best to use pesos all over here, in my opinion. It's not hard to figure out the "exchange" in your head and you get a better rate if you use local currency.

If you don't know the local rules of the road, take a cab instead of renting a car. With full insurance a car will run you around $60 a day. From the can do maps, the rate for a cab looks to be in the $80 range round trip. Spent the extra money on the beach instead of the time in the rental office or dealing with hassles.

Better yet ..rent the Taxi for the entire day and see alot more than just Akumal....I pay from $80-$100 if you can find one more couple from all the Playa Peeps in town you can get the cab for $50 bucks a couple and have a great Playa Info peep tale!!!! I think as long as you have 4 peeps belonging to the forum it will require a trip report and maybe it could win a smallest Playa Info meet mostly award!!!!!!

How would we go about renting a cab for the day? Where do you find one available for the day? We are staying up near 26th.
We would like to show our friends Yalkul, Akumal, Manate Cenote, etc and don't want to drive ourselves. Thanks!

On our first trip to PDC we just happened to strike up a conversation with a friendly cab driver one night and got his phone number. Made plans a day or so later with his brother-in-law, who drove the cab during the day. It was $80, I believe, and he drove us all over. Started at the Tulum ruins before the crowds got there and hit lots of beach bars afterward. We offered him lunch, which he refused, but we did tip him another 20 bucks, I believe. Good way to go if you don't want to drive yourself. We drank lots of margaritas that day. I'll never forget bombing down 307 listening to Queen early that morning.

Hey sunseeker, that woulda been a grand idea, but we'll be on the water on the the Kantaris tour for 5 hrs, so it doesn't make sense for the cab driver to wait.

jeffandbecky: how did you figure $80? Looking at the rate chart, and figuring that Capri is north of PDC (izzat right?), then maybe I guessed at about 240 pesos one way. So about $22USD each way? Am I so far off base? (um, well, remember, I haven't ever been to PDC.....so tis highly probably that my math needs a bit of peep help)

You can ask any driver for the whole day rate..negotiate the rate before you leave..and make sure the driver understands you want the whole day..(another thing you can do is send Heather a PM and ask her how much a private van is for the whole day if you have more than two couples)..I would first try and catch one on 10th ave driving by around 20-30th...if that does not work then head down to around Calle 10 and 5th ave and work out a deal there....I would try to catch one by 8am because you can get the whole day and beat the crowds to the more popular spots like Akumal and Yal-ku.....They are much better around 9am on a sunny day....

I looked at the rates listed on the back of the Riveria Maya map and the quoted rate from Puerto Morelos to Akumal was "about 420" one way.

thanks jeff+becky. Guess I didn't realize that Capri was as far north, or in, Puerto Morelos.

The all day cab works great for a small group. We have done it several times. This year Sunseeker got a van all day for 7 of us. We loaded up the van drivers cooler with ice, beer and water and hit the road. Snorkeled at 2 Cenotes . Got to the Cenotes early and had them to ourselfs. Lunch in Akumal, then a little more snorkeling there before stopping at a friends house in Akumal. Got back in Playa about 5pm. One of the highlights of the trip.
