Going to Mamitas

Hello-
We are cruisers who will be docking at Calica and want to take a cab to Mamitas for the day. Can someone tell me what the protocol is there....where do we rent chairs and palapas? Can we order food and drink all day and then pay at the end or do you pay as you go? Is the food good?

Also, is it easy to hail a cab back to the pier from this location?? How does one hail a cab in Mexico? You'll have to excuse seemingly simple questions as I am a bit of a country girl and have ridden in a cab less times than I can count on one hand. Thank you

Amy

Hi Amy,

if they bring you to the pier at north playa (ie not the pier where the ferry from Cozumel is docking - don't know whether this is the 'Calica' you were talking about) it's easier to walk. Just go to the right side, it's not really far.

You will see the palapas there and just get a free one (if available) and chairs and the guys will come to you to get the money. You can order food and drinks all day and it gets paid when it's served.

Regards
Andrea

Yes it is very easy to hail a cab at Mamitas. All you have to do is when you get to the main dag is wait about 5 minutes and cabs are always going by looking for fares.

As far as protocol if you go to the beach right next to Mamitas, its called Tukan Beach, and yes you can eat at the little resturaunt at the beach. As far as drinking on the beach I believe it is pay as you go.

As far as renting chairs you can either rent lounge chairs and small shaded palapas, or even beds to lay on.

Calica and Mamita's

Hi Amy,

Calica is a port about 15 K south of Playa del Carmen and, wherever cruise ships or car ferries dock, taxis are easily found. Just tell the taxi driver, Playa del Carmen, playa norte (nor-tay) Mamita's and he'll know where to take you.

Mamita's and Playa Tukan are side by side at the end of the driveway where he will let you off; PT to the right, M to the left. At Mamita's, if it's the same as when I was last there, the waiter will usually take your money for a shelter and loungers, if you've already found a spot. At PT, you will pay at the side of the bar on the way in. In both clubs, they issue paper slips that are stapled around the chairs. Total for 2 lounge chairs and one shelter (palapa or umbrella) should be around 60 pesos.

The food at both places is quite good and you'll probably enjoy both the food and drinks. Costs are reasonable and you should pay as you go.

At the end of the day, ask your waiter where to get a taxi. If there are none waiting, he'll arrange to have one called for you.

Otherwise, hailing a cab would involve watching for an empty and then waving to indicate you want him.

I hope you have a wonderful day!

We always ran a tab at Mamitas and paid at the end of our visit, including for the chairs and palapa. Haven't been to Tukan, so can't say. Taxis are easy to get, will probably be waiting anywhere you are. Check the fares you should be charged under the "read more" tab above. Have fun!
