San Jose isn't safe now,
And really never has been. But overall, Costa Rica is as safe, or safer than Mexico. Anyone can be in the wrong place at the wrong time. Of course you may increase your odds depending on where you travel. San Jose and Mexico City have a lot in common. (Bad parts of town.)
We traveled quite a bit by rental car, and never had the slightest problem ever. The Tico's are wonderfull people too. Costa Rica is a beautiful country, and we wouldn't hesitate to go back in a flash. Rixx |

Safety in PdC
I have been here for two weeks now. It is still very safe. Walk on la Quinta and you will see women with lots of bling bling. Diamonds, Rolexes, etc. ... Prada, Gucci, Louis Vuitton, galore... You wonīt get ripped off. If you are a woman traveling sola, as we have discussed before, be aware of your surroundings, and donīt walk the beach at night, alone, donīt leave your drinks at the table when you are dancing or going to the privy. Donīt go into isolated places that you are not familiar with such as beach areas; here are not too many in PdC except Esmeralda.
As for the construction workers, most of them are hanging around the beach on Saturday after noon or so, and on Sunday. These are their days off. The majority of them are from Chiapas. They walk around in groups and yes, they sometimes will stare at women on the beach. I have not seen any of them approach any women and harrass them. Some of them are homeless and sleeping in bushes. I donīt think they are lurking and waiting to rob tourists. Frankly, they are exhausted from working their butts off. The other day, I was walking on la Quinta around Calle 28 around 8:00pm; I was looking for a cigar shop that was recommended to me by Don Gregorio and I saw a construction worker. He looked exhausted and what seemed to interest hime the most was finding a spot to sleep. He was carrying some cardboard and a plastic bag with what seemed to be his dinner. On another occasion, I saw a local Mexicano drive up to a very pretty young woman and bug her. She crossed the street and that was the end of it. I was on my way to the San Francisco de Assis Supermarket. I have walked by construction sites and the workers are too busy to notice anyone, much less harrass anyone. Maybe they will look up, but it is to aknowledge you and say hello. |

It's certainly not a good thing, but when something like this happens, all of us are reminded that there is no place without crime. I think we are lulled into feeling that Playa is a magical place where nothing bad could ever happen and of course, common sense will tell you that within both the native population, and the tourist population, there have to be some bad apples. We all need to be reminded to use a little common sense, wherever we are and do the things we all know to do..stay out of dark, deserted places when alone, stay aware of your surroundings, lock your doors, etc...And at the same time, you can't allow fear to stop you from enjoying life..The per capita crime rate of a place is the true indicator of how safe a place is...and one murder out of how many people and in how great a stretch of time is probably indicative of a pretty low crime rate for Playa.

So anymore updates on this murder? Did the husband do it?
I immediately wondered why anyone would go out walking that late, and especially a woman! I am cautious wherever I go, be it Mexico or the US. In fact, I'd feel much safter in PDC than I would some of the cities I've visited in the States. |

I wouldn't be surprised if the husband did do it. What better way to murder your wife than in a foreign country while on vacation? Best way to get away with it. Stats show 90% of murders are perpetrated by someone close to the victim. Not too many people besides serial killers, which are very rare, would go to the bother of killing a stranger. Especially for some jewelry. |
