Use travelers checks.. they are safer and you can re-deposit any you have left over.
The better exchange rate is not worth the trouble of getting ripped off..you would have to withdraw alot to make it worth it. Sometimes high-tech is not a good thing. |

But luckily in all the years I have used the ATM-card all over the world (I started doing it in 1999 in Seattle and New York) I have never had any problems. |

ATM Fraud
So sorry to hear about this? Is no place safe?
I usually get pesos for Travelers checks or DOllars at the Hotel. I know the rate isn't as good, but in all my trips to Mexico I have never spent more than $100 worth of pesos. In fact, got $60 worth of pesos two weeks ago and came home with money. Maybe its safer to take CASH and go INTO the bank. WIll they give you pesos that way? Rate not as good but safer... |

Jeevers, a question for you.
HOw did they get so much out of your girlfriends account? I thought there were limits on such things.
(This is worse than the story I heard many years ago - in the U.S.)when photos on ATM cards were first available. A person had his/her wallet stolen, and the thief used a PICTURE ATM card to get a cash advance AT A BANK. Bad enough, until you find out that the person was of a different ethnicity and still managed to get a cash advance....) If you MUST use ATM card to get cash (NEVER USE IT FOR PURCHASES), maybe you could open a small second account at a bank and have a TRAVEL ATM card.........you could have a limited amount in that account.....Still bad if you lost the money.......but.............. |

I just withdrew 5,000 pesos from the ATM in question. I've been celebrating an anniversary, so not much work out of me right now. I haven't made it to see the manager yet, but there was nothing funny looking about the machines at the moment.

This doesn't shock me at all. I went to that Banamex during the evening the same week. Nobody around, nobody guarding the "portable" machines, users not covering the keypads as they entered their PINs. On Easter the Banamex was out of money. Used ScotiaBank that day, but noticed some young "tourists" hanging outside, one using a mirror to watch what was going on, we let them know we saw them.
This is a tourist area, and marks are easy. Simple as that. |
