They got us too!!
Just to let you know you are not alone in this. We live in Playa and used the same machine on the night of March 28th. We use that machine all the time and that night it was strange. One machine was out of service (that part is fairly normal) but the other machine looked different. It had a spot to swipe the card and not stick it in as it usually does. My better half who heard about all the these machine add ons a few months ago when others were ripped off that we knew, started tugging on it and grabbing on the side to see if it would come off. He then noticed the security camera over head and thought better of it. It didn't come off so he though maybe it was a new machine. He tried it and off course it told us we couldn't get funds at that time.
Three days later we went online and found over $2,400 US worth of charges and they started aprox 24 hrs after we tried to use the card at that machine. They sure can make the copies fast!!! Our bank says the will refund us the money as they pattern is inconsistent with our normal useage, so we'll see if we get it back or not. I do find it odd that someone was able to mess with this machine when there is security there during the day and a video camera(if it works) that is there all day long. A few months ago our friends were taken the same way from using the Banamex on 5th across from what was Mango/Crush etc...and that isn't just gossip, I saw the bank statement. Luckily she banked with Banamex and went in a threw a fit and they refunded it to her account. I think I'll stick to the machines in Sams at least its under constant watch! I stopped off at Banamex this afternoon. They are certainly acknowledging that someone came in and added an improvised facia to one of the machines that had a card swipe. Apparently the unit was installed, allowed to harvest, then removed. I wasn't able to get any sort of extraofficial details because I didn't know anyone working at the moment.
Moral of the story, if you want to avoid having to detect a fake, use ATMs in the daytime during bank hours. The bank said they were coming up with counter-measures to thwart this, but they didn't provide any specifics. |

I was victim to that machine, earlier in March. Somehow, and luckily for me, my bank in Canada was notified of a 'compromised card' and my accounts were all 'locked down' before any charges had been made.
When I returned to Canada the manager of my bank kindly informed me - and partially demonstrated some - of the ways in which this kind of fraud is executed: apparently it's happening a LOT here too!! I was advised to use ATMs during business daytime hours, and not stand-alone machines (e.g., street corners here). It's happping most at 24 hour gas stations here. Thankfully, some major Peep Angle Action kicked in and I was financially re-established! Gotta hand it to this board of friends!

Well when I was an armed guard for an armored car company. We had this report of a group of theives down in Rhode Island, that had placed the normal night deposit box out of order, by placing an out of order sign on the night depoit box.
Then they put what looked like the real thing right next to the night deposit box, with a sign saying replacement night deposit box. Then at the end of the day the thieves came by and picked up the money in the phony night deposit. They did this for an entire weekend. I think they ended up getting a couple hundred grand and they were never caught. I thought that that was kinda funny, but I don't think that those taken had thought that this was funny. |

Found this on another forum today posted by some Londoners:
My girlfriend used her bank card to withdraw cash from a Banamex ATM in Playa del Carmen on Saturday, 9th April this week and her card has been cloned. There was nothing at all untoward about the machine, all appeared normal. In the three days following, over USD $2,000.00 has been taken from her account. We know that it was this ATM as it is the only time that the card has been used in Mexico. Just a warning to all to be extra vigilant when using your cards, do not assume that you are safe just because you are withdrawing money from a machine. We are now in Tulum and have not yet heard of anybody else who has been caught out although I am sure that we will not be alone. |

Okay. Now I am really scared to use the Banamex. That is always where I get my pesos when I first get into town. I am staying at La Tortuga. Where is another bank that I can withdraw money from my ATM card? Thanks in advance.
