Yuck...I do NOT dig the Riu resorts, other than the Palace that is. Been there, done those, would never again. I still can't see what the draw to these properties is, there are so many others that are so much better. However, now that the Yucatan is closed for renovations, perhaps it will reopen with a fresh new....EVERYTHING....which is something the Playacar needs badly so I hope they are next!
Phewww, now that I got that off my chest.... Best beach = Barcelo Maya There are other hotels a bit further from town than the Barcelo that also have good beaches so it may come down to price. It's depends on what you want to spend for this trip and are you willing to give up the best beach to be closer to Playa? |

Hola Shammy!!!!! How have you been?
My advice is GO WITHOUT THE KIDDIES & The HUSBAND. Love them both, of course, but the idea of PDC without them is soooooooooooooooo awesome.... If you are going without the kids I recommend one thing: Stay away from the GALA!!! We loved it, it was great with the kids, but if you are there without them ... well, there are lots of them there! Go swank, go for the spa, go for the swim up bar and nude men. Have fun!!!! Suzanne |

Ok, after much really thinking this thing through my friends and I have narrowed the resort down to the Gran Porto Real, Iberostar Quetzal/Tucan, Royal Porto Real, the Eldorado Royale and the Barcelo Maya (not in that order). Advice???? Wanting to book soon

taylorfamilytx,
I have stayed at the Tucan, it is very nice and just a short taxi ride into town. This March we stayed at the Gran Porto. I loved being right in town (location, location) the resort is also very nice, great staff, great service. The Royal Porto Real was not done yet when we were there in March and there were some people complaining about being woken at 7:00 a.m. every morning by the sound of construction going on so you may want to make sure this resort is finished. I did hear it looked like it was going to be gorgeous when it was done. Never been to the resorts so don't know about them. |

Yes, The Gran Porto does have a swim up bar. It is on the roof of the resort and I don't think alot of people new about it because it was never really packed up there. Also think it may be an adult only pool as we never saw children in that pool either?
I have also heard that the pools at the Royal are done and they are allowing people to use them. They supposedly have a great swim up bar over there. |

The web site for the Royal Porto Real says it's grand opening is May 6th. I don't know if they will actually make that date or not. When we were there in March they were moving along pretty quickly, they had some rooms done, the pools were finished the week we were there and there restaurante/bar was open & serving breakfast & dinner. My guess at that time was that it would be completed in May or June. If you go to the Real Resorts web site you can look at the info for both the Gran Porto & the Royal Porto. |
