The Dreaded Donnyrich Report
Time for the Mr. & Mrs. DonnyRich Trip Report! March 3 – 11 Hotel Tropical Casablanca Day 1……………… I woke up! Went downtown and hung around. Day 2……………… I woke up! Went downtown and hung aro …….oops, wrong era! And nowwwww, Here’ssssssssssss Donny! Wednesday, March 2: We got up! (No kiddin’, at 5:00am PST) as both Randa & I had to work a full day. Both home at 4:00pm to finish packing. An hour drive to Sea-Tac Airport and we were there at 10:30pm for our 12:30am departure on Continental Air, with service thru Houston (spoken in my best airport intercom voice). Of course, we checked one bag and carried two on. Usually just check them all. Randa’s bag was hiding something and she was getting “her” bag checked very carefully by the screener. Turned out, she was carrying on a pocket knife! (Never seen her before in ma life!) I lost a nice pocket knife that night. Thursday, March 3: Stopped at the Tequilaria on the concourse and had a few “getting started” beers and it was onto the plane lickity-split! We figured we’d be able to sleep on the plane – HA!- not even close to a long wink! “We” happened to pick seats that had a sticker saying, “these seats have limited reclining ability”. It was silly of me to think I might sleep. We landed in Houston International Airport at 6:00am CST. Got picked up by one of them 6-wheel drive go-carts ( he said we were two miles from our gate and I think he was right) and we were at our gate in nothing flat. Had a starbucks (never get too far from home) while Randa went outside to puff one. Left on time at 8:20am and nothing much more to say about the flights except we didn’t fly over downtown Cancun this time. We arrived in Cancun to gray skies (ok, I’m goin’ home if it ain’t sunny!) at 10:20am and a green light and all is good! Walk outside, buy our Riviera Bus tickets for 65 Peso’s each (should I have used USD?) and, Lo and Behold, what’s right in front of me, but a Cerveza Vendor! At that moment, the sun came out of the clouds. You should’a been there. It was a powerful moment! After 3 beers (are ya seeing a pattern here, yet?) while waiting 45 minutes for the Autobus, it arrives and we are “whisked” away (damn, no beverage cart on board!). Arrived in PDC at 12:23 (hey, 12:23 just sounds more accurate, ok? And who’s story is it, anyway?) and walked down 5th, stopping at the Posada Freud to get our Playa Deal Card, then on to the Hotel Tropical Casablanca (I would write a hotel review, but haven’t had much luck getting someone to add it to the reviews section). It was too early to check in, so we changed into shorts and down to the Blue Parrot for some, you guessed it, Cold Cerveza’s! Checked in at 3:30pm into room 16 and were very happy. It’s not Playa Maya, but it was a great deal for $65/night. Had a King bed, large shower, mini-refer and great a/c! and the swimming pool has a nice ambiance. Bummer, no safe but we felt very well taken care of and weren’t afraid to leave anything in the room as we hadn’t met any Texan’s yet, so the Tequila was safe! Lunch at El Oasis for some shrimp taco’s and Coldies! Good food, but we tried to get our check (La Cuenta, Por Favor) 5 Times and 20 minutes later, still nothing. Got the waiters attn. (the one that seated us) and told him, and he screamed back to our current waiter something I didn’t understand, but he finished the sentence with the word “NOW”! We walked North on 5th to about 30th, turned around and stopped at a fairly new bar/hotel (someone help me with the name. It’s across the street from the “new” Don Diego’s on 5th & 20th/22nd) where we had Twoferones. The Margarita’s were pretty good, but I suck’em down like beer, so back on our walk down fifth. We had two friends arriving around 6:00pm, so it’s time to find’em. Let me make a side note here. Originally, there were supposed to be 3 friends coming down, but 3 days before departing Seattle, Kevin had a heart attack and after getting out of the Hospital while we were down in PDC, he was readmitted and had double bypass surgery. He is now out and was told today he is even back to work part-time. I will see him tomorrow as he is also a customer of mine. Stopped at Bourbon Street and sat out on the street waiting to see Jim and Clint. Randa went to the restroom and while she was gone, I felt a very light sprinkle of rain. Looking down 5th, most of the tourists I saw were scattering like pigs at a weenie roast. I thought to myself (it actually happens from time to time) boy, what a bunch o’ wuss’s! It got a little heavier, and, although it didn’t bother me, I figured Randa wouldn’t want to sit in it. So I moved inside and after getting under cover, 32 seconds (remember the accuracy thing?) later it started pouring like there was no tomorrah! It rained for about 30 minutes (alright, time to go home cause it’s not supposed to rain when we’re here!). Finally found Jim/Clint and off down (or is that up) 5th. Saw a necklace or two at the Tequila Barrel, so it was time to “crash” our first party of the week! We met several peeps including, but not limited to, Tstar & Donna; Ms. Nerak936 and David; Tyramania (or is that maniac?) Trish, B-rent, Don&Deb, Seakony and I’m sure some others, but at this point, I had been up over 37 hours, so sue me! Just kiddin’. Randa went to the hotel around 10:30pm. Around 11:30, I started that way only to be shanghaied by Jim/Clint and went to Capt’n Tutix where Jimmy proceeded to dance on the Bar! He was a swingin’ and a swayin’, and I don’t mean his footing, if ya get ma drift! I finally checked out of Tutix at about 1:30am and stumbled down the beach like I’d lived there all my life. Into beddy by 1:45am and “BOOM, BOOM, Out Go The Lights”! PS I had told everyone who would listen that I was up for 42 hours. Upon further review, you will clearly see that I was up for almost 45 hours! Guess I’ll never be confused with Einstein! Don’t think I ever stayed up that long even when I was much younger. Cuff’ still got me beat 48-45! On to day two …………. So sorry about the Length but you'll get used to it after a while! (something I used to tell my girlie friends! )
